COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A dark and refreshing ale belonging to the family of "farmhouse ales" which used to refresh and strengthen the farm-workers all over Europe after a hard day in the fields. This is a darker winter-type which has the alcohol strength to make it suitable for celebration as well. Dark almost black in color, but not burned or roasted. With lively carbonation and a creamy café au lait colored head, this beer presents itself well in the glass. The hops provides the beer with refreshing dryness and bitterness. Whole hop flowers added during maturation maintains the freshness. A little bit of roasted malt gives notes of coffee and cocoa without leaving a burned flavor. Mixed fermentation with a Belgian and a neutral American yeast provides a complex profile with nuances of cherries and and honey without excessive fruitiness which could interfere with the hoppiness. Ølfabrikken Gårdbryg is, of course, unpasteurized, unfiltered and bottle conditioned like all of our beers.

Cloudy dark brown beer. Frothy tan head. Very light sour wood and some aged chocolatey malt. Finishes with a coca cola like tang and the malt getting dry. Not bad but past it’s best methinks.

Bottle. 1 year past ‘best before’. Pours a deep golden brown with a light brown head. Aroma is sweet, dark fruits. A bit oxydised. Madeira. Flavour is sweet and malty with dark fruits again, as well as slight notes of caramel. Remote metallic notes. Dry, sweet finish with yet another round of dark fruits. 26-09-09.

Bottle, 50cl patent. It pours a reddish brown body with a dense, beige, medium-sized head. Rather dark aroma with coffee, mocha, some roasted malt, chocolate, dried fruits and a touch of alcohol. The flavor is rather pleasant as well, with roasted malt, mocha, caramel and bitterness. Quite sweet actually. Full body. Long bitter finish. Yet another pleasant beer from CSA, with a nice bitterness, from both hops and malt. A pity it was both the first and the last time I got to taste this one. (071228)

Bottle, 7%. Batch #234. Quite malty, sweet aroma with a hoppy note, grassy, peppery and sweet. Cloudy brown colour. OK brown head. Quite roasted and flavourful, mostly liquorice. Swelling mouthfeel. After a while the flavour gets more vinous with a tiny hint of horse. The flavour does not seem to have as much hop as the aroma.

500 ml bottle. Dark reddish body with a dense beige head. Aroma is sweet malty, caramel, fruity yeast and hops. Flavor is rather sweet caramel, malt, fruity and hoppy. This starts as a bit average sweet ale and grows more complex after a few more sips. Nice.

Bottle, from Denmark. Been holding on to this for awhile now and it just seemed time to crack this one open. Walnut brown with abundant sticky sand colored head. Woody, caramel and vanilla aroma. Viney walnut flavor, plum skin, a nice dose of turbinado and a little chocolate roast. Apparent but pleasant alcohol. Bright fine carbonation. Menthol hops on the exhale. An understated beer that doesn’t attack you, but instead grows in interest and complexity as you go.
