Commercial Description:
Editor’s note: Recent canned batches of this have been brewed at Bryggeriet S.C. Fuglsang and Harboe.
The first batch of this beer destined for export to the US market was brewed at Nøgne Ø in Grimstad, Norway in 2006. Later batches have been brewed at Ølfabrikken.
Introduced at ’Fynske Øldage’ 2005.

A dark and rich porter inspired by the Baltic porters traditionally made in Scandinavia. Roasted without being burned or bitter, with the flavor dominated by dried fruits and vinous notes. High amounts of residual sugars and a fruity aroma makes this beer the perfect companion for chocolate desserts, if served lightly chilled. Brewed on Maris Otter ale malt, British Brown Malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, two types of caramel malt and brown sugar. Unpasteurized and unfiltered like all our beers of course.

Bottle drank with, and courtesy of Eric. Pours a dark swirling black with a nice brown head. The aroma is mostly smoke and wood, with some brown sugar perhaps. The taste is quite smooth; dark chocolates, rich roasted malts, some brown sugar and hints of dark fruit. A really great porter, top notch! Well made and complex, yet easy to drink.

Bottle: This is by far the blackest Porter I have come across, darker than most Stouts.   Head is large and frothy, of a light brown beige variety.   Lacing is quite nice.   Had I been served this without knowing what it was I would think it would be an Imperial Stout.   Minor alcohol nose, otherwise subtle graham cracker, a little bit of cocoa, some coffee, with an underlying hop bite.   Fairly roasty on the tongue, dry cocoa, moderate bitterness.   This is a hefty Porter!   Full bodied, moderate mouthfeel, somewhat silky.   Finishes with a big combination of roasted malts, bittersweet cocoa, coffee beans, and a earthy hop bitterness.   Very enjoyable, a little bigger than expected too.   Recommended!

Let me begin my comments by saying that I would GLADLY move to Denmark for the opportunity to drink this beer everyday. This is one amazing beer. Ridiculous amount of chocolate and smoky roasted malt in both the aroma and taste of this remarkable beer. I’m actually kicking my own ass right now for not picking up more than one bomber of this. The perfect porter here....

Huge beer with everything and the kitchen sink in it. The result is an ultra smooth pleasure with a dessert aftertaste. More malt would make this a true treasure. Nevertheless, get it and enjoy every sip.

#800 Served in a stem glass a few minutes out of the cellar at around 55°. Rich chocolate, lactose, light roast, light woodsiness, and dark fruits in the aroma. Color is pretty darn close to black with a small espresso colored head. Intial taste is all sweet malt, dark and milk chocolate followed by some roast and acidity that helps clean up and the malt. Huge body, not too far from Expedition. The finish is roast, dark fruits, bakers chocolate and a lingering astringency (not too anstringent) that makes it drinkable. This is a mighty fine beer.

Wow, this was really luxurious. So rich, thick, with layers of flavor--salami (of course!), smoke, chocolate. Rich sipping beer--don’t worry about finishing the bottle, just enjoy sips.

Big bottle pours black with a chocolate milkshake head that seems to linger and clingy lace. The aroma is of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, roasted malt, and coffee. The flavor is so good. The primary notes are of chocolate, coffee, and slightly lactic. The pallet is so smooth and creamy. Overall, this is quite the spectacular brew. It really remains within the Porter category, but comes close to crossing into the Imperial Porter side of the spectrum (if there was one), without becoming an Imperial Stout (I know this makes little sense, but I’m having a hard time seeing this as a Porter - would I want it with a Porterhouse Steak? Not sure). Overall, damn good.

[747-20071008] 1pt9.4floz (w/ jerc). Heavy dark chocolate and roasted coffee malt aroma with some alcohol or medicinal properties. Black body with a big long-lasting creamy dark tan head. Bitter coffee flavour has alcoholic acidity and some dark cocoa. Full body, bubbly effervescence lightens it up. Interesting, a nicely made beverage.
