COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s note: Has also been brewed at Bryggeriet S.C. Fuglsang and Nøgne Ø in Grimstad, Norway
Introduced at ’Fynske Øldage’ 2005.

English: A dark and rich porter inspired by the Baltic porters traditionally made in Scandinavia. Roasted without being burned or bitter, with the flavor dominated by dried fruits and vinous notes. High amounts of residual sugars and a fruity aroma makes this beer the perfect companion for chocolate desserts, if served lightly chilled. Brewed on Maris Otter ale malt, British Brown Malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, two types of caramel malt and brown sugar.

Bottle shared at The BeerMongers... Poured a jet black with a light brown/tan head. Aroma had some roasted barley, and cookie-dough sweetness. Lots roasted, smoked, charred, and chalky tones here and a big malt backing. Thick, cocoa, chocolate syrup with an added dark sweetness. Caramel-toffee, burnt tones, and a nice clean finish.

Bottle @ home. Pours a deep black appearance with a two finger dark brown head. Rich roasty dark chocolate malty nose much like a Baltic Porter with hints of chocolate and coffee. Creamy mouthfeel. Roasty, chocolaty dark malted body. Finish is sweet and roasty.

Pours black with a small tan head. The aroma has chocolate, soy, smoke, and clove. The flavor is quite smoky. Hickory, chocolate, soy sauce, apple wood smoke, clove and biscuit. The carbonation is a little lacking but a solid beer.

Bottle, thanks to my Secret Summer Santa! Pours oily, viscous black, very thin, very persistent dark tan head. Nose is smoke, like fresh woodsmoke, plus tar, creosote, fudge, soy sauce. Flavours are again very smoky, dry fudge, earthy and rich, nice soy character. Very rich and profound. Lovely stuff.

Pour black with big dark tan head and lace. Aroma of licorice, roast, smoke, coffee, espresso, and chocolate. Taste is very sweet with the slightest of bitter, salty, and alcohol. Palate is full bodied with a creamy / oily texture and pretty soft carbonation finishing long sweet and dry. One of those beer thats so good its hard to describe... Classic

Bottle pours oily black with dark tan head. Decent lacing as opposed to what others have said. Aroma dark chocolate and roast. Taste excellent balance of roast, malts, cocoa and slight coffee. Palate thick and rich without being sticky. Alcohol not apparent. Amazing long finish of roast and chocolate. I like Baltic porters a lot but almost all seem to have a minor flaw with something or another. This one is amazingly well balanced with no major flaws. The only thing I could say negative about it is that while it’s good at everything, it doesn’t seem to have any huge strengths either. Still a great beer though and would drink again any time.

Appearance: Pours a motor oil like viscous brown with a dense khaki head that subsides to a creamy film. No lacing left behind on this session.

Aroma: Chocolaty roasty malt, herbal minty hops, oily coffee beans.

Taste: Roast, vinous fruit, dark chocolate, minerals, wood, black coffee. Buried underneath all the darkness lies some spicy Euro hops. The bitter roast lingers forever.

Mouthfeel: Thick, sticky, coating with spicy carbonation.

Overall: World class. There was a bit of hype surrounding this beer, and those beers I hold to a much higher standard when reviewing. I am glad it exceeded my expectations.
