COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This strong ale, partially based on rye, is heavily hopped leaving strong notes of grapefruit and a firm bitterness balanced by a malt body with lots of caramel. The ale has been conditioned for a minimum of four months before release. Ølfabrikken Rugvin is, of course, unpasteurized, unfiltered and bottle conditioned like all of our beers. Only available in bottles.

Bottle sampled at the Pre-RBSG ’Tosa gathering on 6/21/07: Pours a transparent dark mahogany with a frothy off-white head. Aroma of sweet earthy dark caramel with a touch of light fruit. Body starts with a decent full earthy dark caramel sweetness giving way to some drier tartness toward a mildly warming bitter finish.

Bottle thanks to sk8viking! Poured a deep garnety-brown with a short, creamy yellowy beige head. Aroma was of sweet, airy toffee and floral notes.. rather strong on the booze factor where it shouldn’t be. Flavor found some dark fruits and toffee heavily-accented by alcohol.. toffee sweetness and herbal notes ride through the long-ish finish. Just OK. Sweet and slick on the palate with a strong alcohol burn.. warm finish. Meh.

From 50 cL bottle, thanks to Papsoe/Ungstrup. Pours hazy brown/rosa with a little brown head. Aroma is slight citrc and dark malty. Thick mouthfeel. Flavour is dark roasted malt with nice bitterness following. Has a distinct citric and bitterness on top and mild dried fruit beneath. Alcohol srong finish with a sense of liqourice.

(Bottle 50 cl) Slightly hazy, deep orange with a creamy, beige head. Fruity aroma with some burned caramel. Fairly full-bodied with accents of burned caramel and a distinct, grapefruitish bitterness. A vague underlying tartness. 200507

Bottle, at the brew day, May 2006. Quite dark reddish brown colour. Lots of grapefruity hops and sweet, fruity, malt. Almost like a hoppy US barley wine. I found this a bit boozy, with the alcohol a bit too evident and hot. Lots of flavour though.
