A strong English Brown Ale. The full complexity of the body offers undertones of anise, hints of sweet toffee and a well-rounded dry finish. Hopped with Challenger, First Gold and Bramling Cross.

Draft at Wharf Rat: Poured a very dark amber/brown with a small white head, nose of sweet and roasted malts, flavor is light, of roasted nuts and burnt bread, and a light bitter finish.

Light aroma. Goldish color with decent head. A run of the mill pale in my consideration.

On tap at Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis, MD. Pours a hazy brown with a thin tan head that leaves crazy lacing. Big soy sauce aroma with some roasted nuts. Taste is soy sauce, biscuit, major English hops presence, some raspberry tart, big fruit juice sweetness. A bit of nutty bitterness at the end. Drying mouthfeel. 7.5% well hidden. Strange but nice.

On tap. Poured a dark brown/amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is grassy with lots of spice. Taste is very spicy with some good caramel flavors. Some citrus with malts and nuts. Too much carbonation. I would have enjoyed this more, but I thought there were too many spices that detracted from the other good flavors.

On tap at the brewpub on 9/9/09: Pours a transparent dark amber mahogany with a thin, spotty-lacing off-white head. Aroma of sweet toasty dark caramel malts with some nutty character. Starts with some dark malty sweetness and some caramel toffee and light fruity tartness before a drier bittersweet finish. A decent brown ale.

Sample at the brewpub. Pours a murky dark amber-brown color with a thin and compact off-white head that burns away steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Sweet caramel malt in the nose along with a bit of citrus fruit. Medium, smooth body with flavors of malt, toffee and mild hops plus some roasty notes. The finish is soft and malty with a sweet aftertaste. Above average overall.

Very well done. Nice dark amber with a good head. Aroma of malt, hops, maybe some nuttiness in there. Flavor is sweet malt with a nice hop balance. Dry finish.

scraff (2121) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - MAR 21, 2009
Draft - Pratt Street Ale House (formerly the Wharf Rat). Dark amber, thin creamy white head. Soft toasted nut and vanilla cream tones warm to hints of milk chocolate. Well balanced as warm brown toasty notes ride soft toffee chocolate swirls. A light hop bitterness rounds the malt well. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. A well made rendition....

Dark copper brown with a fizzy tan head. Faint malty aroma. Crisp citrus malt and molasses taste.

Draught at the Wharf Rat in fells point. Clear amber brown body with small off white head. Mildly sweet hop malt aroma. Malt and nuts on the pallet with a smooth richness. Slight caramel nut malt bitterness towards the end, flavorful! Quaffed this on a hot summer day trudging around Fells point with Death with a K and the wife and really liked it. Looking forward to getting down there again this year.
