COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A strong English Brown Ale. The full complexity of the body offers undertones of anise, hints of sweet toffee and a well-rounded dry finish. Hopped with Challenger, First Gold and Bramling Cross.

Candied, dark malty, acidic, moderately sweet. Finishes bitter and slightly salty. Some woodiness, some soapiness. Slightly chalky finish, which is bitter, but still acidic. Aroma was faint. Good but a bit off balance somehow. Dull chocolate in the finish.

Draft at Wharf Rat: Poured a very dark amber/brown with a small white head, nose of sweet and roasted malts, flavor is light, of roasted nuts and burnt bread, and a light bitter finish.

I liked this one at first - up front, there is a nice crispness to the malt profile, and a bright fruitiness from the hops - then, through the middle, it starts to get a bit sweet, with notes of fruit, toffee, treacle - not bad, but getting a little less enjoyable - then, the alcohol comes on very strong, especially in the finish, leaving a lightly medicinal notes - starts strong, but disappoints in the end.

On cask at Columbia Firehouse. Served in a 3 Lions Pint Glass. Pour yields a dark brown brew that’s not at all transparent. Thin tan head with a bit of lacing. The nose brings some semi-sweet malt as well as a bit of caramel, brown sugar, and some dry earth. Almost woody. The taste is along similar lines with a bit of sweetness coming through from the malt, but then the backend is comprised of an earthy, woody presence that is oddly bitter and presents itself as almost tannic in nature. Drinkability suffers a bit because of this, though overall it wasn’t bad. Serving type: cask Reviewed on: 02-17-2011

A hazy red beer with a lazing off-white head. The aroma is sweet with light notes of berries and diacethyl. The flavor is of diacethyl and fruit, combined with a light note of citrus, and with a dry bitter toffee end. Served too cold - is that to hide the diacethyl?

With Tim. On tap at Pratt Street Ale House. Strong flavor, obviously English style. Nice color, very little head. OK.

Way too much anise for my taste. Albeit i didnt read the description and wasnt ready for it i just thought it was very one dimensional. I think i also had it on cask.
