This brew wasn’t originally conceived as a benefit for America’s veterans but sometimes the power of coincidence is too much to deny and some things are just meant to be. It all started with a cask of “gin & tonic” Blonde ale at DuClaw’s Real Ale Festival, the brain child of DuClaw brewer Brandon Milhouse. It just so happens that we at Oliver’s are big fans of Gin & Tonic (specifically Hendricks gin fact fans) and, as we’d been talking with DuClaw for some time about brewing together, we suggested brewing a batch of “gin and tonic” Blonde Ale. So that was the beer, a 4.3% abv Blonde ale brewed with elderflowers and juniper berries. Brandon (who has served his country in the Marine Corps in Kuwait and Somalia) mentioned that he’d liked how I’d been naming beers after musical influences and it just popped into my head … “A Tonic For The Troops” … named after the 1978 album by The Boomtown Rats it seemed to cover all of the bases! Of course, within seconds lightbulbs popped above our heads as we realized that, with Veterans Day approaching, we couldn’t use a name like that without dedicating it to this country’s veterans! And so “A Tonic For The Troops” was born. The 3 DuClaw locations will be tapping A Tonic For The troops on Wednesday 21st.
