Our first attempt at a slightly sour ale. The mash was soured with acid ulster malt (the base is Franco-Belge Pale). Bittered with German Northern Brewer hops (courtesy of the Brewer’s Art) and Czech Saaz and fermented with Union Brewery’s Alt yeast with the addition of puréed tart red cherries. The beer is naturally cloudy with a pleasing dryness and slight sour/tart finish.

fiery orange, large-bubbled, heavy lace. Nose is old sock, egg, lemon peel and cleaning product. Flavor is iron and milk up front, citric acid carrying it with berry fruit and metal through the doughy, rustic, lightly acetic finish. Sticky finish.

On tap at Meridian Pint, DC. Pours hazy dark amber with a thick off white head. Apricot and orange nose. More citrus and some coriander with only a mildly sour finish. A decent sour ale.

Tap at Pratt St Alehouse. Pours a clear, deep tea amber. Rockier white head. Soapy lacing. Funky nose- some sweat and strange chemicals. Not really a good funkiness. Taste is odd: cardboard, sickly sweet cherries, chemicals. Becomes worse and worse with heavy butyric acid, sharp bile. Hot, chemical finish down the throat. Probably the worst tasting beer I have ever experienced in my life, unfortunately the aroma is decent, so I cannot score this a 0.5.

Served on cask at Max’s. Pours a clear copper color with no head. Aroma of caramel, grapes and a faint lactic note. The taste is earth, grapes, caramel, herbal notes and a very faint tartness. Medium bodied. Good, but doesn’t deliver as promised with the sourness.

Tap. Pours clear amber with thin, fizzy off-white head which quickly dissipates. Aroma is dates, sour dark fruit, bread and cookie malts, floral hops, caramel, and yeast. Flavor is sweet malts, sour fruit esters, and grassy hops leading to a dry, slightly bitter finish. Light/medium body and low carbonation.
