2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle at Micro Bar, Reykjavik. Seems to me that this is a sort of dark wheat beer with a Belgian yeast, though I don’t think there’s any wheat in it, that’s how it comes across to me. Old brown fruit, red grapes, mandarin oranges and banana esters with malt that comes across like bran muffin. A yeasty, muddy banana and spiced bagel character comes through when it opens, and Flintstone Vitamins / SweetTart candies round out the yeast contribution. So it’s phenolic, prickly and acidic with a lot of messy fruit esters and a muddy yeastiness. I’m thrilled to see Saison attempted in Iceland, this being the first one, just sad that I don’t find this one palatable.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
The first official Icelandic saison is born, and what a beauty it is. Dark murky red, with an off white head. Aroma is rustic saison, some attic, dust, rye, peppers, spices, very spicy! Well balanced on the tongue, perfect carbonation, not over the top but tingling. There are notes of orange bark, rye and herbal bitterness. Very dry finish. Saison par excellence!
