Dogbrick (2228), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 13, 2008 Draught at the brewpub, served in a snifter. The beer pours an inky black color with a thin light brown head that diminishes steadily. Thin sheet of lacing. The aroma is roasty with pungent earthy malt and caramel. Rich body with flavors of coffee, peat malt, caramel and dark fruit. The finish is roasted coffee and dark malt with a lingering sweet finish that is just this side of cloying. Overall the beer is a little disjointed but not bad. riversideAK (1583), Shoreline, Washington, USA Feb 3, 2008 Poured into a snifter. Aroma is sweet roast, chocolate, molasses and brown sugary sweetness. Dark brown almost black with a lasting thin tan head. Sweet for the style. The molasses is very prevalent. It accompanies the roast nicely. Chocolate and licorice come through too. A little bitterness in the finish. it was woody and earthy as jcwattsrugger put it. Body is creamy bordering on syrupy. Carbonation is low and the alcohol is well hidden. I really enjoyed this one. jcwattsrugger (3942), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Jan 15, 2008 on tap-pours a retaining light brown head and black color. Aroma is roasty dark malt-licorice/molasses/coffee. Taste is roasty dark malt-licorice/molasses/coffee/chocolate, earthy/woody hops, alcohol. A bit acidic, nice. Joe would enjoy. BeerLimey (1875), California, USA Jul 20, 2005 Pitch black appearance. Fruity aroma. Sweet fruity palate, well roasted and chocolaty, mild dark chocolate finish.
