While living in Germany during the 1990’s John fell in love with this amazing beer. There are few things more enjoyable than standing outside a historic brewpub on a warm summer evening in Düsseldorf’s Altstadt (“old city”), drinking a cold, refreshing Altbier as the sun sets over the Rhein river. Alt (pronounced ‘Aahlt’) literally means “old” in German, as in “old school.” In other words, it’s beer the old fashioned way. Technically, OMB Copper is ale due to the type of yeast it’s made from (Obergärig or top fermenting yeast), but a long time ago the folks in Düsseldorf learned that by lagering their Alt for several weeks after primary fermentation, the result was a full-flavored yet smoother and more refreshing beer. OMB uses authentic ingredients in our Copper Altbier, including expensive (but worth it) noble Bavarian hops. We also adhere to traditional, time consuming, costly decoction brewing techniques to produce this copper hued, amazingly satisfying “lagered ale.”

Dark Amber color, good carbonation. Light mouthfeel, great roasted malt aftertaste. Nice beer.

Serving: Draft at the Hilton Doubletree in Charlotte. Saw this brew throughout the city. Light nose with a bit of caramel and slightly earthy notes. Thin on the tongue, a touch sweet, with caramel, light malt, and a slight nuttiness. Off dry finish. Meh.

On tap at Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Across America southeast edition. Pours a clear copper with bubbly off-white head. Aroma and taste are sweet malt forward with a nice fruity ester backbone. Not too bad, good German alligators and true to the style.

Pours a gorgeous clear copper with a strong ring of one finger head. Nice earthy aroma with nutty tones floating atop a mild caramel backing. Flavor is very similar to the aroma. Very clean finish with a medium hop bite settling in towards the end of the swallow. Very balanced and perfectly crafted from this oasis of German brewing in NC. Sampled several times, but far better on tap.

On tap for italarican bday shenanigans. Clear copper pour. Pleasant caramel sweetness, slight vinegar tang, husks, grainy. Not bad.

On tap poured into a hefeweizen glass. The aroma is that of caramel and roasted nuts with a touch of bread and marmalade, and a hint of floral. It’s a rich, deep but clear, copper-orange body with a fluffy white head that retains well - a thick ring with near full surface coverage - and leaves a good webby lacing. The taste is a good balance of medium sweet and bitter. The texture is oily with a soft fuzzy carbonation. The medium body finishes with toasted nuts, grains and a floral touch. The aftertaste is roasted grains, citrus, and wood - which lingers for a moderate amount of time, but cleans up nicely.

It is copper colored with a decent head that produces limited lacing. There is an aroma of roasted malts, spices, and faint earth. It has a taste of malt which is sweet with a bit hops on the tongue. It’s smooth enough on the way down. It’s fairly decent.

Sampled on draft this beer poured an orange-caramel color with a large creamy tan head that left exceptional lacing. The aroma was bitter, woody, herbal, off and weird. The flavor was bitter, woody, herbal, off and weird - with something that reminded me of chinese brown sauce. Medium length finish. Medium body. Not good.

This is a very unique and intriguing offering, more of a caramel amber lager appearance and aroma, but a hoppy and herbal(?) taste. Grassy and woody notes, with a malty base. Medium bodied. Clean finish with a faint almost piney (leafy?) aftertaste. Very different, can't say I enjoyed it overall, but interesting.

Draft, no real aroma. Taste ok, like a sideshow. Not my favorite brew I’ve ever had, but ok.

[on tap at CLT airport] Creamy aroma of lightly toasted bread and faint noble hops. Clear, dark copper under a thin, persistent white sheet. Light coffee and sweet base malt flavour with some light toast and a mild bitterness that comes in late and hangs around a bit. Medium light body, moderate to medium carbonation, almost clean finish.
