COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Fruehbock (pron. "Froo Bock") - Literally "Early" Bock, Frueh is also short for Fruehling which is the German word for Spring. Try our Spring Bock as the cold winter fades and the warm spring winds begin to blow. This deep golden, slightly malty bock beer comes in at 6% ABV, which you’ll find hard to believe because it’s so smooth and refreshing. Don’t wait to try it...because like springtime in Charlotte, this seasonal will come and go quickly.

Clean and sharp golden yellow pour with one finger of off white head. Subtle malty notes in the nose with a light sweetness. Delicate spicy hops with a light sweetness and metallic character in the flavor. Light medium body.

Draft. Clear golden color, fluffy white head. Aroma of light white pepper and hay. Taste is lightly spiced straw. OK.

Pours light amber, basically translucent. No head. Taste begins nice, malt sweetness and quickly fades to cardboard, astringency, no. This is just wrong.

On tap at Maxwell’s. Yellow colored pour, white head, fruity malty aroma. Taste is smooth, fruity, kind of hoppy, but not very refreshing. Did not taste the way I figured it would. Probably not something I will get again.

On tap at Carolina Beer Company in the Charlotte airport. Pours clear gold with a white head that disappears quickly, leaving a bit of lacing. Malty, bready with some grass. That carries over into the taste, but there’s some really nice fruit and sweetness that comes through. Medium mouth. First of this style for me, so maybe I’m over-estimating this one, but it’s really nice.

Sampled on tap at Olde Mecklenburg’s 5th Anniversary Party. Pours a golden color with white head. Grainy, malty, earthy, spent grain aromas. Earthy, grainy, sweet malt flavors with a dry, bitter finish. Pretty nice helles bock.

[on tap at CLT airport] Sweet hay aroma with some apple juice accents. Clear gold under white wisps and a ring. Flavour is grainy malt and faint hay with some cereal grain and a moderate bitterness that comes off crisp. Medium light body, moderate carbonation, lagery finish.

On tap at CLT brewpub location. Clear golden with a lasting film of cream and lively carbonation. Nose is earthy beeswax, toasted grain and a touch of dry grass. Taste is the same. Medium body has medium high carbonation and finishes dry.

On tap at Growlers Pour House in Charlotte. Pours is clear golden with an above average white head that leaves some sticky lacing on the sides of the glass. Looks and tastes much like a regular, but well-crafted, lager, with some spicy hops: a description of a typical maibock. The hops are less obvious in the nose than on the tongue. Still, the taste is mainly bready. The aroma is quite light, reminiscent of white bread with light citrus notes. M: Light body; medium carbonation. O: True to style if a shade light on the hops; well-crafted, clean and refreshing.

I’m starting to think that many of these OMB brews need to be enjoyed FRESH. As I read through the few reviews of this beer - it is getting slammed, unjustly so in my opinion. The beer pours a deep golden color and completely transparent. Aroma is of light hay and a touch of bubblegum sweetness, unfortunately this blends into a urine-like hop aroma. The beer really starts to shine upon the first sip, crisp and sharp at first yet this yields to a soft and sweet malt-forward flavor, doughy with a slight buttery note. Finishes somewhat skunky as the hops try to clean things up. All in all not horrible and interesting for sure - alcohol and malt forward, I can see hopheads rating this lower but I can appreciate this relatively hard to pull of style. Admirable attempt.
