Ljunkan (379), Karlstad, Sweden Feb 20, 2009 Bottle at Bishops Arms, Karlstad. Pours a ruby red-brown color with a small, white head which remains for a while. Aroma has plenty of dried fruits (plums, raisins), toffee and spices. It smells definitely nice. Flavour is sweet and fruity. It feels very malty with notes of toffee, dried fruits (it’s like matured plums I would say) with some light notes of spices. A bit of alcohol too which maybe disturbes a bit, but overall filling and quite smooth on the palate with soft carbonation. Overall a very good interpretion of an Abbey Dubbel from an american brewery (from what I’ve tasted before american interpretation of belgian beer can have a bit of too much american hops which doesn’t really fit in). Not the best from Ommegang though, this ends up somewhere between "Three Philosphers" and "Hennepin". unclemike (834), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA Feb 14, 2009 Do these people make a bad beer I think not. Bottle. High creamy and long lasting off-white head. Hazy orange read body. Powerful barley malt aroma with a good deal of alcohol, grassy notes and a faint hint of cocoa. Sweet caramel coffee flavor made less sweet by a good deal of alcohol and a bit of bitterness. Low carbonation. Short aftertaste. Interesting and hard to describe BroSpud (583), , Massachusetts, USA Feb 12, 2009 Updated: Feb 19, 2009Best description I can think of is that it is a poor man’s Chimay. Purchased this primarily for the low price (relatively speaking compared to the other craft beers on the shelf next to it). Lot of flavors coming through but something seemed a little off. I would recommend spending a little more and getting a true Belgian ale, you know, one that is actually from Belgium.
2/18 - I think I may need to retaste this one. Based on the Three Philosophers that I just tasted which is also from Ommegang I have a feeling that the Abbey Ale I tasted may not have been a good sample. j12601 (1149), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Feb 7, 2009 On tap at the Peekskill Brewery. Pours a clear ruby brown with a medium tan head. Cloves, bananas, malt, and stone fruit on the nose. Mouthfeel is thin and clean and full of sweet malt. Finishes lightly with notes of banana and yeast.

Pours a dark brown that is still lets a fair amount of light through. The head is thick off white and plentiful with the correct pour.
The nose is sweet with prunes and dark fruit. Touch of malt and hops in the background.
Yeasty and sweet at the start. The brown sugar and malt continue through the middle to a long slow finish. A warmness of alcohol nips at the finish but not overwhelming despite its abv.
Thick around the tougne with light carbonation.
Very very nice. Another great brew from one of the best breweries in the east.
BrianDorry55 (115), Spring Hill, Florida, USA Jan 27, 2009 750ml from Trinity Liquors in Spring Hill, FL. Aroma of malt, mollasses, toffee, alcohol. Pours maple syrup color with a very thin head. Flavor of malt, toffee, and mollasses. Nice and easy on the palate. Its another good beer from Ommegang...but this one didnt blow me away. Gypsy19 (602), California, USA Jan 25, 2009 Pours a burgundy-brown with as little or as much head as the pourer wishes. A little sweetness on the nose a la prunes, raisins, cherries. In contrast flavor is quite unsweet, with some authentic belgian yeastiness/breadiness, unsweetened chocolate, and a little honey. Quite enjoyable overall, could’ve been a tad sweeter in flavor for my liking, but other than that very good. Excellent overall. Ryan82SM (229), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jan 25, 2009 Aroma reminded me of apple vinegar, with some crazy fruits in the aroma. Appearance is nearly red but reveals a more rusty color near the creamy head. Plums, caramel, and sweet malts round out the flavor, delicious. Palate comes on lively, almost burning, but dissipates quickly. A real nice job on a Dubbel by an American brewer.
