bubbleflubber (885), Collinsville, Virginia, USA Jun 17, 2008 Huge 4-finger almond-hued head tops a slightly-hazed burgundy pour... nice retention that leaves a thick cap all the way down the glass. Yeasty dough and fruity notes to the nose. Nice start of sweet fruits and Candi Sugar, an "ester-take" on heavy malts. This leads to a yeasty bread mid-palate, with a touch of alcohol following a lightly bitter finish. Mingling around are more notes of complexity... some wooden earth, unripened bananas (from many different layers of yeast). Soft carbonation levels and a medium (to medium-light) embodiment tend toward an oily mouthfeel. Nice abby dubbel, and a classic example of the style. Would be nice paired with food. This only gets better as it warms... nice and rounder, with lots going on; livelier carbonation levels provide more character at slightly warmer temperatures. (Honestly, this isn’t my first "style" of choice, but it’s an appreciated offering; a very good brew, staying true to the Trappist style.) Good stuff. On the next bottle, I’ll let it sit for a bit before partaking. leninthedesert (112), Nevada, USA Jun 17, 2008 Outstanding take on a Trappist...er...Abbey style beer. Deep, dark fruit tones underpin the medium-bodied malt flavor. Finish is alcohol and yeast. Tremendously enjoyable. Chipper (179), Red Lion, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 15, 2008 A huge light brown head that disappeared quickly. Very sweet and thick with lot’s of yeast floating in the glass. Toffee and malt with a little bite. Smooth lingering finish. jameswolfe (141), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Jun 14, 2008 Here is another great abby. I was surprised at how much I liked it. Nice sour yeasty and fruity scent hints at the flavor to come. Well balanced witha tinge of alcohol and a lont finish. Skeegle (476), Maryland, USA Jun 13, 2008 Nice beer that is a bit yeasty with subdued apple sour fruitiness. I didn’t find much of the sugars like everyone else did, but that could be because my bottle was a 12oz and not a 75cl? Still a nice beer that tastes like boozy apple and grape skins with lots of spices. afireinside96 (807), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 11, 2008 750ml bottle served in a trappist glass. Pours deep garnet-brown with a tan head. Smells sweet and spicy. Taste is candi sugar, &cinnamon. Finishes with a touch of brett funkiness. Very good. thejon375 (390), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 9, 2008 Talk about a bang for the buck. I got this beer in a 750 mL bottle and only paid $5. Great abbey that has notes of chocolate, coffee and a finish of sweet honey. Absolutely delicious. I would recommend it to anyone. mjs (1445), Helsinki, Finland Jun 5, 2008 (Bottle at Pikkulintu on 2008-06-04) Deep red wine colour. Small white head. Yeasty and bit sour nose. Lots of carbonation in full and dry palate. Chocolate, bitterness, fruitiness, liquorice and malts in taste.
