Aquilo (248), California, USA May 1, 2008 The commercial description here is pretty dead-on. Dark red-brown with a thick head. Fruity aroma, I think that citrus dominates here; lime and lemon, with a nice sweetness (perhaps apricot?) to balance it out. Flavor is caramely and buttery with more fruit. Aftertaste is pleasant and hardly bitter at all. One of the best beers I have had in a while. zappafan99 (462), South Carolina, USA Apr 30, 2008 Updated: May 30, 2008More malt than I am used too in a belgium, but it is nice. Smokey. It’s like the cheeze and cracker together. Well done. Nice Smooth aftertaste. Not bitter and not too sweet.. Smooth ...I’m enjoying this experience...writing as I drink... hmmm...nutty and even..It’s like dark chocolate. Not too sweet ,not too nutty...all the tastes are in the right place. BeerEssential (96), Massachusetts, USA Apr 29, 2008 I’m not a huge fan of the dubbel, but for some reason I keep coming back to it. Perhaps I just respect the style. Well, the Ommegang offering is as good as anything else I’ve had (Chimay, Allagash, Rochefort). I can’t find any fault with it. For the price ($5.99 in MA), if I was a dubbel fanatic I’d come back to this again. kiefdog (1534), Tampa, Florida, USA Apr 28, 2008 750ml bottle from Willow Bend Liquors (Florida). Pours a dark chocolate brown with a thick and frothy tan head. Aroma: some sweetness, caramel and honey laced with an earthy overtone, grass and straw. Faint hints of spices. Taste is much of the same: earthy, malty with a slight sweetness. Some hints of honey and caramel, but an earthy overtone throughout. boFNjackson (1233), Portland, Oregon, USA Apr 28, 2008 Bottle... Poured a cloudy ruby with a great light brown head. Aroma of spices and figs. Roasted malt lend way to raisins or prune-like flavors. Alcohol was hardly present in the flavors making it very easy to drink. Hops are subtle but create a warming balance. obguthr (986), Poquoson, Virginia, USA Apr 26, 2008 Date and raisin nose. Clear ochre, with a thick tan head. Flavor is dark roasted malt, dates, and smoke. Finishes with a nice smoke and subtle charred bell pepper. Not my favorite, but distinctive. Would pair well with any cheese. VitaminR (421), Colorado, USA Apr 25, 2008 Updated: Apr 26, 2008Burnt molasses with some roasted nuts. Deep reddish amber with a massive frothy head that lasted forever. Roasted sweetness, with some sourness, not much hop bitterness. Some slight spiciness, mild complexity, a little licorice present. Was a bit boozy, but gets more well-rounded as it warms up. Expected a little more, but still tasty. Changed (161), Ithaca, New York, USA Apr 21, 2008 12oz bottle. pours hazy brown and with copious head. Intense mouth-feel; carbonation is very present, but doesn’t detract from the beer’s enjoyment. Many layers of flavor, ranging from toffee to cherries, and finishing with a not too strong alcohol presence. Personally, this is one of my favorite beers that I have tasted. I’ll be sure to pick up another, next time!
