wingman333 (233), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Aug 28, 2007 Great richness and carbonation with berry-like flavor. Good tartness and acidity which are married with the creamy nutty flavors, making this a very good Belgian. It was better than I remembered it when I tasted it a year ago and an economical choice too. Great color. ilikestuff (222), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Aug 24, 2007 Pours a very deep red mahoganny color with a nice dark tan bubbly head. Aroma is of candy and wine. Sweet assertive flavor indicative of belgians, tastes nice at room temperature. Alcohol flavor is pronounced but only adds to the appeal of this brew. Has a tart raisin flavor that gives way to the dry warming alcohol flavor. yesyouam (587), Fairport, New York, USA Aug 21, 2007 Ommegang... Oh, what a head. A huge, melted styrofoam, creamy head. The beer itself is the darkest shade of magenta I could imagine. Dark, but not obscure in hue. It’s really turbulent and cloudy. It’s a candidate for ’best head ever’ along with Hennepin. Head and lacing are so tenacious. The aroma is of deep grain, alcohol, grass, hay, plum, black cough drops-- all soft. It’s dank, like a basement. It has a medium to heavy body. It’s soft and syrupy with an acidic flick at the end. It lingers. The flavor is like wood with tarragon, fig, plum, fennel, tamarind and brazil nuts. It’s very complex and very boozy with an aftertaste like scotch. It actually tastes stronger than 8.5% ABV. Great beer. dmac (1418), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Aug 21, 2007 12 oz bottle purchased at the brewery. Poured a murky brown with a large off white frothy head. Aroma was complex with the standard yeastiness of a Belgian style but also had a ton of fruit including raisins, plums, prunes, banana tied in with a light maltiness. For some reason on my initial sip I got a mouthful of a metalic flavor but after that first sip it disappeared. Flavor was dark fruit, yeast and candy sugar. This beer was far better then I remembered it and was a nice suprise on a rainy day off from work. GlenVargas (120), El Paso, Texas, USA Aug 20, 2007 First of all, any beer with a cork already gets cool points. Ommegang’s (1 pt. 9.4 oz. bottle) pour is beautiful, a deep, dark, ruby-tinted brown with a lasting cream-colored head. And, the taste ain’t no slouch either. Immediately after the pour, I smelled some dark fruits, or raisin, which later developed into a fuller sensation with strawberry or raspberry. The taste which followed the sniff was obviously fruity, with some sweets and some sours, and underscored by a decent balance of roast and bitter. The finish is a little bitter (and you definitely know you’re getting the 8.5% alcohol), and it really seems somewhere between grape juice and wine. Ommegang is definitely one of my faves. derst27 (35), Hackettstown, New Jersey, USA Aug 20, 2007 Pours mahogany with frothy head. Strong nutty scent. Surprisingly smooth flavor, great rich taste tat doesn’t have an overly hoppy aftertaste. Dark but not overpowering, an all around excellent, slow drinking beer. IrishBoy (2685), Bakersfield, California, USA Aug 18, 2007 12oz bottle from puzzl, thanks Andy! lightly hazed cheery brown with a huge beige head; nose of cloves, caramel, figs, and nuts; flavor has caramel, raisins, spices, and some light bitterness. bhensonb (4182), Woodland, California, USA Aug 16, 2007 Aroma resembles burgandy wine, with dark fruits like raisin and prune. Deep mahogany color with a beige head that flattened quickly. Medium bodied, with near fizzy carbonation (real ale). The flavor is caramel, toffee, raisin, prune, and some chocolate. The mild sweetness dissipates, and the finish is relatively dry. There is arguably some bitter, and likely some anise. Complex ale.
