Very dark brown coloring with a hint of red at the edges in my Chimay chalice. The big foamy head is well retained. The aroma is rich and fruity. Notes of grape juice, port and nuts. The taste is very sweet and nutty. It has some brown sugar in the finish. Also has notes of a little bit of espresso and milk. A nice silky smooth mouthfeel tops this all off. A very sold beer. I think my sample would have benefitted from a little more aging. Probably the best all around beer I have had from Ommegang.

Pours deep yet dull amber with semi loose dark tan head. The aroma is pretty rich with ripe plum, figs and dates along with modest amounts of yeasty spices in the background. The taste has the same dark fruity sweetness as noted in the nose and then slowly gets more and more prickly and bright with spiciness, spiced red apple, raisins, nutmeg and then picking up softer yeasty notes into the finish.

Bottle. A rich dark amber beer with a beige head sitting on top that stays as a coating of lace on the glass. Wonderful to look at. Aroma is fruity and caramelly sweet. Rich complex flavors - honey, caramel, plum, some sort of berry - with a big alcohol warming at the end and lingering toffee/honey.

UPDATED: OCT 1, 2006 Burgundy, small off-white head, no lacing. A rather complex beer despite its weak aroma. At first it’s all about the caramel and candies sweetness, but soon spices and some sour notes (cherries) are added and then the caramel moves aside to leave room for the spices and it all ends with a peppery finish. Highly carbonated. The rich body and complex taste hide the alcohol very well. When transferring my handwritten notes I wondered why I didn’t rate it even higher. Ah well, perfect excuse to try it again.

750 bottle. Deep burgundy color with thick long-lasting tan head and lace. Malty sweet aroma of bread pudding, raisins, dates, prunes, nuts, bread, and dark sugars. Nice smooth carbonation and excellent palate. Delightfully full of bread pudding character and ending with a definitive smash of toffee. Totally enjoyable and pairs really well with foods.

UPDATED: DEC 11, 2003 Poured reddish brown color with an off white head. It had a sweet aroma of fruit and caramel maltiness. Definite honey taste upfront, some sweetness, dark fruits turns alittle sour with a malty chewy mouthfeel. Slight alcohol burn on the way down.
