Commercial Description:
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

Oh, what a great beer! Poured into a snifter, where the head stayed the whole time. Rich, fruity dark fruit taste, hints of caramel,. Pleasant bitterness, not too much. Suggest this beer to all, will try more from Ommegang!

I have a lot of respect for this brewery, but this one is just sorta plain jane, imho. Nice rocky head and a pleasent enough taste profile- maybe the style is just getting done too much.

From a 750 ml. caged corked brown bottle with a blurb along the left side of the front label and serving instructions on the right side, no bottling date I could find, sampled at cellar temperature in a Ommegang chalice. Poured a elegant ruby hued brown with a foamy tan head that settled into a thin sudsy lacing, very minor amount of sticking. Aromas of honey and caramel malts, fruity and spicy, with a touch of licorice. Good carbonation and a crisp, dry, velvety smooth lightish medium bodied mouthfeel. Delicious tasting and malty at first, caramelized sugar, honey with a light toffee, earthy spices, dark tropical fruits, a nice chocolate licorice flavor, the alcohol is well masked and provides a smooth warm in the palate, and a dry yeasty and malty finish with a flavorful licorice lingering in the palate. This is a really nice Belgian dark ale, tasty and balanced, well worth trying.

(on bottle) Dark, claer red, beige head. Graet aroma, mix of vintage port and marzipan. Perky and then the wrath of a very hefty 8,5% hits in. Odd, for such a low percentage. Haevy malts and figs takes it home for a long warm finish.

Great aroma of dark prune-like fruit and toffee sweetness with a touch of peaty earth. Body is a hazy brown and head is a thick froth of tan. Flavor is thick and fruity with a big sweet punch. Alcohol is present but doesn’t dominate... just provides a bit of warmth. The fruit flavoring gives just a touch of a sour pucker midway through the development. The malt presence has a bit of a smokey/peaty flavoring. Nicely blended.

(Bottle at Pikkulintu on 2008-06-04) Deep red wine colour. Small white head. Yeasty and bit sour nose. Lots of carbonation in full and dry palate. Chocolate, bitterness, fruitiness, liquorice and malts in taste.
