COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

Bottle. Cloudy reddish color with a huge frothy off-white head that diminished very slowly leaving good lacing. Good complex fruit and wine aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Good fruity flavor with a sweet finish that had a moderate duration with no alcohol bite. Very good brew for number 700.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2007 750 ml bottle, corked and caged. Deep rich brown with ruby and copper tints. Very malty and fruity aroma. Toffee, caramel, biscuit malt, plummy fruit, light toastiness, some honey. There is also some nice dark cherry aromas in here. Some heavy sweaty spiciness, a little bit of dustiness with some lingering malt sweetness. Toasty finish with a bit of light molasses and licorice. Great complexity and well balanced.

Looks and smells like it’s imported from Belgium and has the flavor to match. Sweet, malty, very fruity, and suitably complex, this brew hits the spot on a cold night.

Brown copper ale with light moka head. Light coriander and sweet malt in aroma, with vinous qualities. Rich malt and barley sugar with coriander and sour apples. Rich bodied Belgian ale, always a pleaser! Tap at CNY brewfest, Feb.5 2005.

(Cave-aged 2001 version) Dark red beer; little white head. Enormous oxidation jumps out in the nose, 'biscuit', but way over the top as in the discards of pastry-making. Taste is completely madeirised - in 2 years? After the Hennepin, that clinches it: Ommegang beers are just too light to age gracefully. They just oxidate. Slick, medium bodied mouthfeel. One disappointment more from Ommegang. They ought to raise their price - AND their quality.

Bottled 750ml shared with the wife - David Copperfields NYC. For me this is too sweet an attempt at recreating a good Belgian beer. The colour is a muddy brown. There is lots of candy sugar in both the nose and the mouth, but it just doesn't seem balanced enough.
