COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

Impressive. I don't know why I was expecting an alcohol-laden, fruity beer. This is a fine beverage. Pours out to a bizarre mix of amber and brown, we'll call it brownber, in the glass with a monsterous candy-brown head. Smell is that of fruit, prunes, licorice and spice. Taste is sensational. A very nice blend allows the malt to shine on without anything, including the high ABV overpowering it. Light fruit, biscuit and to some extent licorice come through. Very nicely done.

UPDATED: SEP 10, 2005 New rating (8/23/2003): wow. purely amazing stuff. wonderful rich, deep, and complex earthy spicy flavors. a near-perfect beer. Old rating (4/6/2003): Interesting aroma, with a burgandy-ish taste. i normally drink everything wicked cold, but this tastes pretty good at room temperature.

750 ml. corked, caged bottle. Pours out a deep, rust colored, cloudy and hazy color, with a short lived head that faded to clumps of yeast as an island in the center of the glass. Aromas of tanned leather, dried fruit, mascerated cherries, and a cola quality to it also. No hops aromas here at all. Tastes of malts, dried fruits, cola, and belgian yeast. No alcohol taste or aroma to it at all. Coats the tongue with a syrup-like consistency to it. Finishes sweet on the palate. Some banana esters to it when it warms up slightly. Definitely a great beer to try, at least once.

Pours clear burgundy, with a light, cookie-brown head. Nose is very malty and bready, with some minute sweet (chocolate?) notes. Flavor is nice and intense, sweet burgundy undertones. Very smooth palate, mild-medium carbonation. An extremely well-brewed beer. I gotta get me some more. :-D

UPDATED: SEP 5, 2007 Draft and bottle. The alcohol hides so well here. Very smooth flavor with a fruity palate that is not dominated by the crisp flavor. Good abbey strong that would improve in 1-2 years of cellaring. !

Update The nose is just beautiful. Plum, raisin, and berry pastry dance creating a delightful aroma. Sweet taste, notes of honey, plum, dried fruit and berry. An absolute treasure of a beer.

Style and Glass: Abbey Dubbel, Trappist ABV, Volume & Calories: 8.5% in 2 fl oz. estimated at 50C Purchased at: Joe Canal’s Lawenceville, NJ for $0 at a tasting event Aroma: Well done Belgian style. Scent of cloves, spices, anise, oak, age, mold, and alcohol. Visuals: Beautiful packaging, nice tan head, sticky lace, and a deep mahogany body. Taste: Well balanced, fruit, oak, wood, anise, great layered flavors. Very well done. Palate: Fruit juice texture, beautiful long lasting deep dark, earthy flavor. Overall: A very well done American version of the style. I’d have it again. Very nice especially for the price. An excellent abbey ale from an outstanding brewery. It pours a dark burgundy color with a thick white head. The body is dark and hazy, full of wonderful flavor and aromas. The aroma is filled with caramel malts, fruit and spice, as well as an alcohol kick in the nose. The palate is full and the alcohol has a nice warming quality to it. Favors of sweet caramel, dried dark cherries, prune, and yeast dance on the tongue. These favors mingle for a time and finish slowly. Ommegang is grate as it is and could be even better with cellaring.
