4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 MoDog (927) - Griffith, Indiana, USA - MAR 11, 2008
Poured from a 750ml caged and corked bottle and served in a tulip. This beer poured an attractive mahogany brown with a few ruby highlights and a thick, fizzy head of tan foam. Excellent retention and a fair amount of slippery lacing. The aroma of the beer was made up of dates, ripe dark fruit, chocolate, graham cracker, and a bit of bready yeast. The flavor included notes of dried dark fruits floating on a nice backbone of honey graham cracker maltiness. Just a touch of warming alcohol shows up as the beer reaches the back of your tongue. The mouthfeel was full-bodied with a moderate amount of very soft carbonation. An inviting aroma and a tasty, complex flavor make this a memorable beer everytime. Very nicely done!

Pours mahogany with frothy head. Strong nutty scent. Surprisingly smooth flavor, great rich taste tat doesn’t have an overly hoppy aftertaste. Dark but not overpowering, an all around excellent, slow drinking beer.

From the 1 pt. 9.4 fl. oz. bottle. The pour is a distinguished looking burgundy-brown with a hefty supply of foamy tan head. The aroma is vibrant with wheat, yeast, and caramel malts and subtle with the alcohol. The mouthfeel is of good texture and stability. The taste is pleasingly pungent with sweetness and licorice and a nice hoppy finale. Ommegang does it right.

Wow! what a great beer. Fruity earthy aroma that is complemented by the taste. Lots of flavors come through in layers starting with fruit and moving through to chocolate and a little bit of alcohol. Complemented the cappucino cheesecake my wife made perfectly.

Draft at the Haze. Thick, deep brown-amber color underneath a massive rusty beige head. Very true to style, displays lots of Belgian nuances. Yeasty plum and dark fruit tastes, pungent raisin. Sweet and certainly malt centered, not much hop character to speak of. Rich and full bodied, complex dark malt and Belgian yeast flavor. Well done, though it seemed a lot cooler when it was 4.99 a bottle a few years back..

75cl bottle. Dark brown-red with some sediment and a thick, creamy beige head. Creamy pureed dried fruit, banana, and spiced sugar cookie aroma. The flavor is lightly sweet up from with caramel and dried fruit, and gets dry and alcoholic in the finish while remaining smooth. The mouthfeel is luxurious and soft, but with lots of carbonation. Pretty light on the tongue as well. While the yeast is relatively subtle, it provides a very nice profile for the beer overall. I know it’s been said a thousand times at this point (possibly literally), but this is a great dubbel that is very authentic for an American-made beer, even if the brewery is Belgian-owned.

A very sweet and heavy abbey ale. Not my usualy style, but highly drinkable and complex.
