COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

One of the finest glasses of American beer that I’ve ever had. Bronze ale with a ruddy foam head. Inviting malty, peppery aroma. Malted ale flavor with tart plum/peach/cherry fruit middle and pepper-alcohol finish. Palate was very good, but missed the 5 rating slightly.

This really is a good beer and well worth cellaring a few bottles for an extra year. Additional age shows how much this beer really does stand up well agianst Chimay. Ommegang has done a fine job.

Nice dark amber brew. The subtleness of star anise makes this belgian slightly different from the rest. Quite smooth and enjoyable.

Good stuff! Wonderful fruity aroma, like apples aged with their peel. The color is so nice, translucent brown and red. The taste is complex and begs to be sampled over and over. The commercial description does a pretty good job: fruit again, and a candy-like sweetness. The alcohol warms nicely on the way down too. I sure wish I had bought another bottle of this one! I REALLY like this brewery! Belgian, Belgian-style who cares? It’s good and I will buy it again.

Dark ruby hue with an excellent yeast, fruity, spicy aroma. No doubt a good amount of aromatic Belgian malts used. Lots of banana in the nose. Great flavor that matches up to the aroma, but slightly watery. Lots of fruit. It is difficult to replicate true Belgian beer in USA I believe. Great effort!

UPDATED: MAR 11, 2003 12 oz. This is unbelievable. Aroma of fruit candy, strawberries, bananas, pear. COmplex flavor with lots of berries and banana and a good deal of alcohol. Dries out nicely and finishes long. Lacks the creamy palate of the great trappists, but otherwise superb beer. I am certain I will buy this again. Update: Indeed, I have, and on several occasions. I notice a sour snap to the beer that I'm not entirely happy about, but I think on the other hand that the beer is one of the best looking I've seen--holds its thick head throughout the entire glass.

UPDATED: DEC 28, 2005 Nice head retention & lacing of beige/tan head w/ murky chestnut brown body. Dark fruit(plum), toasty malt sweetness and clove yeast. Some brown sugar notes as well. No hop presence in the aroma. Flavor is fairly dry, but finishes on a bit of a sweet malty side. Light hop flavor in the finish and a little bit of chocolate and malt sweetness mid sip. Plum fruitiness is farirly evident. Toasty and bready malts intermingle w/ plum fruitiness along with spicy clove and peppery yeast. Finish is a bit semi sweet w/a lasting fruity aftertaste. Fairly dry mouthfeel with a lighter body. I’m slightly disappointed with the body, but it’s minor flaw IMHO; Carbonation is moderatly high and has a great warming alcohol mouthfeel; A really good beer!!! I mean a really, really good beer, especially for the price!!!
