awaisanen (1161), Irvine, California, USA Mar 14, 2007 From a 750mL Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy, brilliant sunset ruddy fire with a tall layer of frothy off-white head. Big, fruity aroma with some notes of raspberry licorice, toffee, and sherried green raisins. Marachino cherry, caramel, and a subtle touch of clove spice. Not too much phenolic spice in the nose; the fruity dimensions are the clear focal point. Medium bodied, heavily carbonated texture that lightens up the palate weight enough to make it remarkably easy to drink. Huge flavors, however. Rustic, well toasted pumpernickel bread crust, mild chocolate licorice, and prune flesh create an intense flavor layer. Behind the dark malts, some spicy yeast chracters follow closely. A little bit of plum and dark toffee linger into the final smack, before finishing cleanly with a smidgen of minty herbal hops.
mansquito (652), Boston/Philadelphia, USA Oct 13, 2008 Pours a really tan head and a dark reddish brown body. Strong fruity aroma with some burnt sugar thrown into the mix. Heavy thick and dark fruit taste. Has some notes of oak and there are a bunch of subtle hops. Spices and malts abound. The palate is a little syrupy and there is a sweet sugary finish, but not excessively so. Taste sticks to your mouth afterward. This was a really tasty dubbel. pumpmaster (288), Florida, USA Oct 12, 2008 750ml bottle purchased at Total Wine Pembroke Pines, FL for $4.99 Very good. michaelvern (5), Ohio, USA does not count Oct 10, 2008 Pours Mahagonny - cherry aroma - hits with some carbonation - good alcohol. Avengedpoet (63), Mesa, Arizona, USA Oct 6, 2008 Pours a very deep maroon with voluminous head that quickly dissipates, yet never disappears entirely. Current bottle has been aged approximately 9 months since purchase, due to the over-whelming spiciness of this brew fresh. Aroma is still of heavy spice, of dark fruit, belgian funk, as well as faint cherry tartness and licorice. Taste is very deep and much more well-balanced than when fresh. The effervescent carbonation really helps to scrub the palate from the heavy dubbel taste, which makes it even more satisfying. This time around was much better than previous experiences. For people who are not fond of heavy spicing, I would definitely recommend aging it awhile to let some of that drop out. mikalooch (32), , New Jersey, USA Oct 6, 2008 Pours a deep red with thin beige head. Aroma of cherries and yeast, almost smells like a cognac. Malt and fruit to start, finishes with a flat kind of sourness which sticks around. Medium carbonation, leaves a bit of stickiness to it. Solid beer
