COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Let us now acknowledge the dark arts of brewing. Our limited edition Art of Darkness Ale is deep, dark and magical, with champagne-like carbonation and rich matiness from a complex recipe of multiple barley and wheat malts, as well as flaked oats.

Using no spices or flavorings, Art of Darkness gains all its rich aromas, tastes, and apparent spiciness from the malts and Ommegang’s proprietary house yeast.

There are no secret ingredients or magical incantation. There is only Ommegang brewers’ creating the finest quality dark, strong ale of complex and deep character.

Art of Darkness is a fine ale to enjoy immediately, and is excellent to cellar.

Malts: Pils, pale, cara crystal, aroma, Midnight Wheat, Cara Pils, flaked oats. Hops: Spalter Select and Styrian Golding. Yeast: Ommegang house yeast. Spices: None

The star of my night. In a flute glass, dark, auburn shade, creamy looking head. Woody, smokey, spicy nose. In the palate is spice, cloves, apples. Creamy mouthfeel, a tiny bit of hops , dryness at the back. This stuff rocks.

Pours a dark brown, aroma of alcohol, yeast, and spice. Warming alcohol comes through on the initial taste and mouthfeel. Relatively crisp yet boozy. Subtle dark fruit (raisin) flavors come through on the finish. Paired with an afternoon BBQ, it held up well against various dishes and remained a nice compliment after warming. Drinks better paired than alone for my tastes

750 cc from Capone’s. Pours turbid chestnut with 3-finger splotchy tan head that laces irregularly. Nose is funky rock sugary malt, with figgy fruit, oaty cacao, hops. Tastes semi-dry, malty, yeasty, with figgy fruit, spice, cacao, and a dry finish. Very complex.

Very dark brown, like cola, with a good sized, lacing, very resilient pillow of beige head. Aroma of roast, sweet fruit, alcohol, and funky yeast. Taste is malts and yeast, a little wood and a little metal. Not bad though. The unpleasant flavor doesnt linger. Medium bodied and smooth. Slightly dry.

Beautiful color. Not black, but dark. Aroma is inviting and spicy. Flavor is sweet and full without being overpowering. Doesn't hide the high alcohol content particularly well. Very light carbonation, making a very enjoyable beer.

Black and thick witha fluffy beige head. The aromatics are surprisingly subdued, but some grape and date show through. The palate is amazingly dense and complex. Layers of black and blue fruit transitioning to sweeter pit fruit. Love this to death.

Arbitrary score 4/5 for Appearance, as nighttime conditions prevented correct assessment. Sourish-woody-yeasty nose, the last giving fruitish impressions as from peach or pineapple. Fruity in the taste, but much drier than the nose suggested, notes of peach and pear, but less outspoken estery than the nose; liquorice retronasal. Warming up, I get some unlikely off-flavours with a hint at diacetyl. Light for its ABV, hint at alcoholwarming. One to drink cold - warming up it gets sticky to cloying. Many thanks to ChrisA!

Poured into a goblet. 4.0 A: Black color. Almost two fingers of frothy tan colored head. Retention is good and a short ring of lacing is left. 3.5 S: Lots of roastiness in this. Molasses, light ashiness, and dark caramel. Even the fruitiness comes off with a bit of extra darkness, like stir-fried or grilled plums, dates, black currants and figs. Clove-y phenols from the yeast. 2.5 T: Taste is a bit of the let down. The roasty flavors in the nose dominate the taste and it doesn’t work. From first taste to finish, this is overly charred and has an almost tannic finish. It’s not a horrible taste, but it’s bad enough to put this below average. Much of the fruitiness gets lost to the roast, but the fig and dates are still pretty apparent. Less clove-y than it smells. 3.5 M: Lighter medium body. Good spritzy carbonation with a very faint creaminess. Normally I’d rank this higher, but the burnt aftertaste prevents that. 2.5 D: This is more of a Belgian stout than a BSDA, but whatever. It’s overly roasty and unbalanced and that’s no good. I expect more from Ommegang. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 05-13-2012 02:12:28

Draught at Milltown. Pours the color of charred wood with two fingers of creamy coffee tan head. Nose shows some dark fruit and a light acidity, semis-sweet chocolate and grain husks. Has an almost ’extract’ character to it. ... Flavor has the extract thing going on too. Dark fruits and cacao with a lightly spicy phenolic quality and warming alcohol. Medium in body and dry on the finish.
