Bottle pours dark brown with frothy tan head. Aroma of dry red wine. Flavor dominated by slightly sour grapes, quite boozy, and reminds me more of a dry, red wine than an ale. I expected more.

The nose has some of the house yeast along with the fruitiness. All of the flavors blend so well that nothing stands out. A little licorice in the background. Its moderately sweet, balanced with some bitter black malts. The finish has a dry texture. Mainly malts dominate. Very likeable, but too pricey. ($$).

Candied plum and currant nose. Mahogany, thick tan head, no lace. Charcoal and currant initially, but candied plums burst in suddenly. Faint maraschino cherries also present toward the end. Finishes far too warm for my taste. Medium body.. I had expected more body, but I thought this was an imperial stout, which clearly it is not. Reminiscent of St. Bernardus’ Christmas Ale. It isn’t quite as good, but it’s a more than suitable surrogate.
