Let us now acknowledge the dark arts of brewing. Our limited edition Art of Darkness Ale is deep, dark and magical, with champagne-like carbonation and rich matiness from a complex recipe of multiple barley and wheat malts, as well as flaked oats.

Using no spices or flavorings, Art of Darkness gains all its rich aromas, tastes, and apparent spiciness from the malts and Ommegang’s proprietary house yeast.

There are no secret ingredients or magical incantation. There is only Ommegang brewers’ creating the finest quality dark, strong ale of complex and deep character.

Art of Darkness is a fine ale to enjoy immediately, and is excellent to cellar.

Malts: Pils, pale, cara crystal, aroma, Midnight Wheat, Cara Pils, flaked oats. Hops: Spalter Select and Styrian Golding. Yeast: Ommegang house yeast. Spices: None

shared 750ml bottle. pours black with a 2+ finger off white / tan head which settles to a 1/4" throughout. rich nose with dark fruits, citrus and apple - really nice yeast esters. medium body with sweet malts, sugar, dark fruits, bread notes and banana. sweet finish with raisins, dates and candi sugar with lingering banana and citrus.

On tap. Clear dark brown body with a red hue. Nice, foamy tan head. Good lace. Really interesting and unique aroma is difficult to describe. It’s rich and sweet. Kind of like a soaked cake. Bigger body. Drier texture. Light carbonation. Some spice notes like cinnamon, but something more subtle -- it works well with the complex aroma. Some chocolate. Dates. Great brew, very tasty. Definitely a work of art.

Spooky good. Malts come to the forefront in quite an earthy presentation. Oats? Used quite well. Hops take a back seat combining with the yast to have a smattering of spiciness. Hides the 8.9 with ease. Full bodied and flavored.

A dark Belgian beer that sacrifices nothing of its heritage to be full flavored an dark. Hints of spice and fruit. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(draught) clearish medium brown with thick tan head. Nose of dark fruits, fairly sweet, but funky, banana. Taste of ripe banana, raisin, toasty and funky. Kind of weird. Maybe fermented too warm as its quite estery and better when cold. Nice palate though.

On tap at Petrol Station. Pours a dark brown with a small beige head that quickly diminishes. The aroma is a fruity malt and raisin. Medium mouthfeel with a sour fruit and yeast. Easy to drink a good Belgian strong ale from Ommegang.

Draught at TJ’s: Aroma of malt, chocolate, plums, raisins, and some dark ripe fruit. Poured extremely dark brown/black in color with a small, creamy, dense, brown head that diminished but lasted throughout as a film on top of the beer. Opaque. Slightly sparkling. Flavor is medium to heavily sweet. Tastes of malt, vanilla, coconut, dark ripe fruit, slight cocoa, plums, and raisins. Medium body. Dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, vanilla, coconut, dark ripe fruit, raisin finish is lightly dry. 8.9%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

Tap @ Milltown. Dark reddish brown with a small light tan head. Nose is faint at first--warms up a bit--dark fruits, roast, cherry. Flavor is a muddled malty, cherry, dark fruits.

Tried this beer over dinner with a bunch of friends, gotta say that for using no spices for the flavor or aroma the guys at Omegang did a fantastic job on this beer. Best on a cold night :)

Draft at Maloney’s. Poured a deep dark burgundy/brown with a large foamy light beige head. Aroma of yeast, wet burnt toast, dark berries, light chocolate, tropical fruits and a slight hint of butter. The body is very full with fizzy carbonation and a slick mouthfeel. Flavor of yeast, char, dark toast, burnt strawberries and some tropical fruits. Meh, not bad but the body needs to be toned down some and maybe a touch more chocolate.
