UPDATED: MAY 11, 2012 How great it is to find truly unique beers. This looks like a stout but is lighter bodied and very carbonated. Strong aroma of malts and oats, and a very sweet finish. Great beer!

On tap at the House of Brews. Deep Reddish brown, almost black. Smells of banana, lots of yeast, licorice and dark fruits. Strong roasty aroma. Tastes like lots of bananas. Licorice behind it. Then a heavy roasted malt. The licorice and sweetness comes back in the finish. Medium body. Well carbonated. I expect a lot of Ommegang dark Belgians. This one didn’t quite hit the heights of their others.

Bottle at home with the wife. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have dark fruits, cocoa, Belgian yeast, cherry, raisins, some earthy notes, good beer.

Wow, apparently this beer has changed names since I bought it! This is a rating for the original Art of Darkness version. Apparently I followed the advice to age it which I think was a great idea! Initially I was worried about this beer from the aroma which seemed very sweet and strong which usually means heavy and overly alcoholic (I’m thinking along the lines of The Beast from Avery). However, the first sip dispelled this fear as it was sweet but relatively light in body and truly in the Belgian dark ale style. Dark is right as this is nearly opaque but shows a nice ruby color under strong light. Belgian candy sugar is the most prominent flavor here but there’s also a light bittersweet chocolate note that comes through. The alcohol is noticeable but not overwhelming in any way. Finishes sweet and slightly spicy with cinnamon notes. Excellent beer for the style and I’ll have to try the new version to see if it measures up to the original.

UPDATED: JUN 10, 2016 Presentation: it was poured from a 1 pint 9 .4 fluid ounce bottle into and Ommegang tulip glass. The label has a nice description of the beer and it lists the alcohol at 8.9% abv.Appearance: the body has a dark brown almost black color with a thick Light tan head on top. The head hangs on well and leaves some slick leasing behind as I drink.Aroma: aroma is fairly light overall but brings mellow dark-roasted malts along with subtle hints of dark fruit. The nearly 9% ABV adds to the nose as well.Taste/Palate: Up front I get light almond and mellow roasted malt notes. Sweet dark fruit notes of figs, plums and raisins move in with caramel like sweetness as well as some sweet boozy alcohol notes. Hop bitterness comes in late and adds mild herbal bitterness to the finish. The palate is full and somewhat sticky yet well carbonated as I would expect from a big Dark Belgian Ale.

Pours a nice dark reddish amber color. Aromas of fruit, and some other hints, maybe some spices, maybe caramel. Flavor is a bittersweet, malty, and a hint of hops with a nice bittersweet finish.

Where: Old Line Fine Wine Spirits & Bistro. How: 750 ml bottle. Appearance: Pours nearly pitch black, not much light getting through, huge tan head. Aroma: Lot of dark fruit, some yeast, toffee and caramel, brown sugar. Taste: Bread crust, dark roasted malt with some chocolate, dark fruit, finishes with moderate bitterness of bitter chocolate and cloves. Palate: Medium body, velvety carbonation. Overall: Very nice.

Aroma lacks a forward alcohol presence which is nice. Great foamy pour that took forever to dissipate. Chocolate notes that aren't too overbearing in the taste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Black with thick foamy lasting brown head; aroma is mild herbal and hints of chocolate; flava is herbal hop and fruit prunes; feels light not watery fizzy zing; finishes bitter some tangy roastiness
