There are no secret ingredients or magical incantation. There is only Ommegang brewers’ creating the finest quality dark, strong ale of complex and deep character.

Art of Darkness is a fine ale to enjoy immediately, and is excellent to cellar.

Bottle:   Deep cola, moderate frothy light beige head, fairly nice lacing.   Bright yet musty nose, of dark pitted fruit, hearty bread, and general yeastiness.   Similar tongue, smooth albeit a bit bubbley, warming.   Very much bready, but not heavy, the airy aspect keeps it from going there.   Bright dark pitted fruit, and general musty funk.   Despite its smoothness, it washes out pretty quick.   Very minor heat on the exit.   Lingering dark pitted fruit and breadiness.   Enjoyable!

Bottle. Pours a very dark, lightless and deep reddish-brown. Aroma is straightforward enough; sweet, Belgian yeast, fruit, grass. Taste is similar; sweet fruits, bubblegum, spicy, alcohol, Belgian yeast. Medium bodied. Medium carbonation, very appropriate. Some lacing. Nice, overall. This is a beer that does a great job of having taste and personality while still being relatively simple. They may have used several malts in the brewing process, but this beer wins in what it achieves in simplicity. Well crafted.

This beer’s aroma is subtle yet enjoyable to the pure roasted malt character of it, and the appearance iss reddish dark brown with no head. The taste is slightly sweet, slightly sour, and slightly umami, creating a very pleasing balance, which was complemented by the medium body, soft carbonation, long finish, and slick texture.

750ml bottle shared at Zach & Matt’s tasting. Pours brownish black with a small tan head. Aroma is really nice, some chocolate, malts, dark fruits and vanilla. Taste is slightly boozy, but very balanced with notes of malt, chocolate, Belgian yeast, spice and dark fruits. Highly carbonated, almost champange-like. I really enjoyed this one.

I love dark full beers, but this one was a little too large tasting. It was a little hard to enjoy because it was very strong tasting. It is hard to describe exactly what I didn't like specifically. I remember thinking wow, that is a big beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap - heavy on the carbonation that really fizzes away. The yeast flavors are definitely Ommegang.
