The Belgian motto is "Strength in union." No phrase better describes Three Philosophers, which unites malty Belgian-style ale with imported Kriek, Authentic Belgian Cherry Ale for a Dark, Mysterious cherry-chocolate Hue.

Bourbon Barrel aging brings out notes of vanilla, toffee and oak.

Draft pour at Rustico Alexandria. Poured a slightly ruby red, clear color with a small off-white head. Aroma was dried fruits, light vanilla, woody notes. Bourbon notes are there, but really smooth. Flavor was actually quite nice. Woody notes. Smooth and pretty tasty.

Full disclosure: I’m a big fan of the original. Aroma: fruit, spicy, bourbon. Appearance is like original, dark Amber. The flavor is fruity, bourbon, bready. Medium in body. Nice. Although the barrel aging adds nothing overall.

On tap at Hops & Pie, listed at 11.4%. Clear, reddish brown appearance with a dissipating off-white head. Aroma of fruity esters, oak, vanilla, caramel, toffee, light cherry and light bourbon. Similar flavor, complex, malty, lightly fruity and moderately sweet with a medium to full body. Nice, a slight upgrade from the original IMO.

Clear ruby red pour with a really nice hue and thin beige head ... aroma of dark fruits (plums/figs), cherry, vanilla, chocolate, oak and toffee .... taste is mostly kriek, has dark fruits (think sugar plums), chocolate, vanilla, dry oak and toffee .... has a dry dark fruity bite ... lingering sugar plums, chocolate and vanilla on the back end.... mouthfeel is a bit lively and slick ..... finish has some booze, with lingering dark fruits, chocolate .... solid nice brew, but not as good as the original

Poured from a bottle into a tulip: Pours dark redish brown with a decent tan head. Aroma of oak, bourbon, dark fruits, sugar, anise. Taste is somehow not as sweet as I expected. Lots of plum / prune, cherry, other dark fruits, honey, bourbon, earth. Heavy beer, sticky on the palate, pretty good.

Big bottle. Hazy red color with an off white head. Sweet plum alcohol aroma. Plum sweet slight bourbon flavor. Heavy body. Bourbon does not overwhelm the beer. Only a slight bourbon burn at the end. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
