JohnnyJ (1282), Carlsbad, California, USA Apr 4, 2009 Brown pour. Lots of chocolate and cocoa, hints of malt and bread. Really boring in complexity. More like a light chocolate shake with alcohol. Very forgettable. SudsMcDuff (1691), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston, Texas, USA Apr 3, 2009 I like an escalator because an escalator can never break, it can only become stairs. There would never be an escalator temporarily out of order sign, only an escalator temporarily stairs. Sorry for the convenience. and by the way.. this beer sucks! old smell, great lacing, garbage taste, terrible stuff.. Skeegle (476), Maryland, USA Apr 2, 2009 Nice palate that’s a bit chunky and smooth. Lots of chocolate and a sort of breadless choco cereal taste to it and it looks nice too. Heavy for 7%. Really good. andyhite (290), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Mar 31, 2009 looks like a stout...smells like a belgian stout. definitely a belgain stout from the yeasty aroma. the name fits the brew. somehow it’s semi-belgian, chocolate-y, and stout-ish. it hasn’t quite integrated all of the aspects of the name, yet it has made a valiant attempt as such. it’s funny that all the aspects shine through of each of the three styles, yet nothing really integrates too gracefully. as a belgian ale, it’s pretty good, and definitely unique. as a stout...well, i’ve seen worse, but i’ve also seen far better. the malts show themselves as the ale warms, yet it still feels as though it is lacking the stout mentality. it’s like the brew is a bit of a conundrum, in that - it doesn’t know what it wants to be. great idea, ommegang (or duvel). but the execution could have fared to more advantageous results. djaeon (15), Chula Vista, California, USA Mar 26, 2009 Pours thick and black. Thick foamy head with decent retention. Great lacing. Looks like a cappuccino in a pint glass.
Big dark chocolate roasty aromas.
It lives up to the chocolate indulgence name. Light bitterness. Definite coffee hints
Feels very smooth, with moderate carbonation.
VERY drinkable. I don’t see myself getting tired of this one. l1br4r14n (274), Washington, Washington DC, USA Mar 26, 2009 Updated: Jul 30, 2009Draft. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate and light coffee. Flavor is well balanced roasted malt with cocoa - neither is overwhelming as is common with chocolate beers. Fantstic chocolate stout! WISEGUY572 (1244), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 17, 2009 I understand some of the lower ratings from the top raters. In my tasting notes I said that it was "too easy to get something like this right" and it is. Sweet and bitter from a huge slam of Belgian chocolate, under hopped so the hop bitterness won’t compound the chocolate bitterness. Opaque brown, little head. Great mouthfeel. Just too easy to enjoy and too easy to drink. Low difficulty factor, but nicely restrained alcohol content. Lubiere (4463), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Mar 13, 2009 A deep dark stout with a thick lacing dark moka head. A durty dusty chocolate aroma, with a bit of sweet milk and nutty notes. In mouth, a good pungeant stout with metallic notes, bready yeasty notes. Not bad, but not excellent. Bottle bought at CJs, Potsdam, late 2007. Tasted Nov. 2008
