Narnad (681), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA Mar 11, 2009 Pours black with a nice thin, tan head that fades fast. Aroma is mostly chocolate with some dark malt notes hidden behind, some sweet caramel and toffee notes in there as well. Flavor is a moderate strong semi-sweet chocolate up front moves into a more bitter roasted malt middle that accents the chocolate very well and finishes slightly yeasty with some light prune/raisin flavors. Mouth feel of the beer is a bit lighter than what I was expecting but it feels decent through the tasting. Overall the brew is good and chocolate does stand out in the tasting but the packaging makes it appear it bit better than what it really turns out to be, unfortunately. RedSox2004 (353), Pacific Palisades, California, USA Mar 11, 2009 Pours black with a deep tan three-finger rocky head that slowly dissipated to a solid film and left thick rings of lacing. Big smell of chocolate malts and roasted coffee. Bittersweet chocolate flavor is strongest on the tongue, but is accompanied by generous amounts of smoked wood, espresso, and, if you search for it, dark fruit. Full bodied, not much carbonation, and the bittersweet chocolate lingers. baraciisch (138), USA Mar 10, 2009 Pours black with a tan head... Brown sugar and chocolate flavor initially with a sort of tobacco flavored finish.... Not a huge fan of the belgian style chocolate stout... Roasted malts are kind of overpowered by the brown sugar and pruny sweetness characteristic of the belgian beers... Decent though smith4498 (816), Miami, Florida, USA Mar 9, 2009 Pours black with tan head. Aromas of roasted malts and chocolate with some coffee. Similar flavors with some acidity and tartness. Medium to full body with moderate carbonationand a creamy mouthfeel. BossHossBikes (147), Tennessee, USA Mar 9, 2009 750ml bottle poured into an Ommegang snifter. This pours black and somewhat viscous with tons of sediment floating around. The head is tan and dissipates at a nice pace. The aroma is very roasty with some mildly sweet notes and some thick cocoa, coffee, and dried prune notes. The brew is smooth and lush on the tongue. A very mildly sweet chocolate is very dominant in the initial flavour. As the brew passes allowing the tongue to breathe, coffee notes become apparent as well as the darker citrus and a distinctly different and drier cocoa flavour. Some berry citrus also become apparent, surprising me since it didn’t seem too evident in the aroma. Toasted notes, accompanied by a light bitterness, explode towards the finish. The two types of chocolate, the malts and the belgian chocolate, become easier to differentiate now providing an interesting clash of smooth and dry in the finish. The coffee and the light bitterness accompanies the drier chocolate malts while the berry and dark fruit citrus assists the smoother belgian chocolate. This is quite enjoyable. fidel (882), Livermore, California, USA Mar 9, 2009 Pours dark brown, sweet, smooth, roasted malts, dark chocolate, little coffee. popkow (107), New York, New York, USA Mar 7, 2009 Bottle poured a light brown foam with minor lacing. Dark chocolate, burnt malt, a hint of boffee bean that blended a balance palate. Great seasonal for this Cooperstown Brewery. polomagnifico (532), Saginaw, Michigan, USA Mar 4, 2009 Bottle. Aroma has notes of roast malts, coffee, cacao, dark chocolate, yeast. Dark amber black hue with a large chocolate tan rocky foamy head that left great lace. Flavor sweet and smooth. Palate is medium bodied and watery flat. Really nice and smooth drinker.
