This pours black and somewhat viscous with tons of sediment floating around. The head is tan and dissipates at a nice pace. The aroma is very roasty with some mildly sweet notes and some thick cocoa, coffee, and dried prune notes. The brew is smooth and lush on the tongue. A very mildly sweet chocolate is very dominant in the initial flavour. As the brew passes allowing the tongue to breathe, coffee notes become apparent as well as the darker citrus and a distinctly different and drier cocoa flavour. Some berry citrus also become apparent, surprising me since it didn’t seem too evident in the aroma. Toasted notes, accompanied by a light bitterness, explode towards the finish. The two types of chocolate, the malts and the belgian chocolate, become easier to differentiate now providing an interesting clash of smooth and dry in the finish. The coffee and the light bitterness accompanies the drier chocolate malts while the berry and dark fruit citrus assists the smoother belgian chocolate. This is quite enjoyable. fidel (918), Livermore, California, USA

Dark amber black hue with a large chocolate tan rocky foamy head that left great lace. Flavor sweet and smooth. Palate is medium bodied and watery flat. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 2, 2009 750ml bottle served in a shaker glass. Dark brown pour with a lasting one finger tan head. Smells of dark bitter chocolate, licorice, and copper. Lots of dark chocolate in the flavor, some coffee, and anise as well. Full bodied with minimal carbonation. Lasting chocolaty bitterness in the finish. Leaves wonderful layers of lace all the way down the sides of the glass. Not something that I would expect Ommegang to brew but very tasty none the less. kevd193213 (486), Hope Valley, Rhode Island, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 2, 2009 750mL bottle. Dark brown pour with a thin, whispy brown head. Aroma of burned malt and chocolate. Taste mostly dominated by malts with a nice bitter dark chocolate finish. Decent, but a little pricey given the lower ABV and compared to their other offerings. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 1, 2009 Pours extremely dark brown with a frothy head. Succeeding pours have no head to speak of. Aroma is of lots of black malts and some faint hints of powdered cocoa in the background. First impression is over-whelmingly boozy, especially for a beer that is only 7% alcohol. Tastes like they fermented it at 90. As the beer warmed up significantly and I was able to work out almost all of the carbonation, it turned into a decent little beer, especially when mixed with a Belgian Red from New Glarus. Overall average beer, not stupendous. Fairly disappointed in Ommegang, who are usually stupendous. highibus (427), Mill Creek, Washington, USA
