nbutler11 (729), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Dec 16, 2008 Sadly disappointing. Bottle from yem25 in a trade. Strangely, I was expecting CHOCOLATE. What I found was closer to barley and mild bakers cocoa. The charred roast and high water content didnt help. Perhaps its just me, but I associate indulgence with sweet flavors, not dry. DrnkMcDermott (1831), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA Dec 15, 2008 Draft Chalice at Bavarian Haus, Lisle. Solid black appearance with parfait-like foam that had to be poured off to fill the glass. Lovely smell of a dark coca bar. You do have to like chocolate in beer to like this one. I do like it. Bitterness seems to come from the roast malt, cocoa and some hops all at once. Yet it has a lot of mellow qualities behind its very stout-ish base. Nice dry finish. topherh (878), Kearney, Missouri, USA Dec 14, 2008 Poured dark brown with a beige head. Aromas of chocolate, roasted malt, and coffee. Flavor is sweet chocolate and bitter roasted malt. BrendanC (31), Rochester, New York, USA Dec 13, 2008 Poured a deep, nearly blackish brown, with tan head. Chocoate mixed with coffee aroma, with the coffee flavor more pronounced than I expected. Heavy in the mouth, with a bit of the malty edge to the flavor that I typically enjoy. ROGUE (621), Newark, Delaware, USA Dec 10, 2008 750 ml bottle pours dark brown with a light tan head. A nice even aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. Tastes of smokey malt, sweet chocolate and a hint of coffee with none that are to overpowering. Very pleasant balanceed stout. Sparky27 (1559), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Dec 10, 2008 750ml corked and caged bottle. Pours a nearly opaque black with a one finger tan head and nice lacing. Nose is sweet malt, milk chocolate and some roastiness. Taste is chocolate, burnt malt, light dark fruits and powdery cocoa with a touch of bitter hops in the finish. Medium creamy mouth feel. Good stout. sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 8, 2008 draft at blind tiger. poured pitch black without head. aroma was largely dark chocolate and cream. super silky texture, but not the most pleasing flavor. a bit nutty and not that sweet. so, its decent. Strykzone (1458), Wood River, Illinois, USA Dec 6, 2008 Pours a nice thick almost black with a nice tan head that ends in a thin layer and stays that way. Aroma is coffee and chocolate. First sip brings a big bitterness that soon fades. Again, coffee and chocolate reign supreme. Hops are in there but are not significant to the taste and some dark fruit can be noted. This is a chocolate and coffee bomb and is a very good beer that is exactly as advertised.
