talon1117 (611), Bellvue, Colorado, USA Oct 4, 2009 2007 bottle I believe. Pours a very dark brown with no clarity to the light, notable sediment and a dark beige, pillowy, a little foamy, and moderately full head which is somewhat lasting and leaves a bit of scattered Belgian lace. Nose is pleasant but not overly exciting, notes of creamy cocoa, light bakers chocolate, mild espresso roast, a bit of burnt dark sugars, and some almost burnt wood notes. Flavor is similar with more bakers’ chocolate, light dry cocoa, very light crushed pecan notes, mild espresso with a moderate bitterness and decent acidity, lightly burnt dark sugars, and some earthy, moderately light hop bitterness. Palate is nice with a moderately full, nearly lively, velvety and drying feel. Finishes with some dryness and bitterness from the espresso notes and the burned notes but also some chocolate and pecan notes finish the beer in an average finish. While decadent is not the word I would use to describe this one, it is quite complex, very balanced between chocolate, bitterness, and other dark malt tones. A lovely beer to drink but lacks the richness, overall depth, or prominent chocolate sweetness of great chocolate beers. Certainly not very Belgian in any sense but still quite nice. cmillward (418), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 2, 2009 Draft @ redlight redlight. Pours a dark brown/black with a slight tan head. Nose of chocolate, roast and cocoa powder. Flavor is roast, burnt, a little acrid, more cocoa powder and a slight bitterness at the finish. Thin body, slightly creamy. bconley (351), Fern Park, Florida, USA Sep 28, 2009 Tap at redlight. Very dark brown almost black. Has very strong chocolate malts with a bitter coffee smell. The taste had much more hops in it, which I liked. Still alot of dark chocolate and spicy cocoa. Nice. tmoreau (524), Lombard, Illinois, USA Sep 26, 2009 Sampled at a craft beer tasting at Curly’s Bar and Grill in Glen Ellyn, IL. as part of the dessert course. Poured a black/brown with a modest, dark tan, foamy head and spotty lacing. The aroma with definately roasty, with mocha notes as pressed coffee and baker’s chocolate. The flavor was similar, adding a moderate hop bitterness and smooth malt. A creamy mouthfeel and lightly dry at the finish. anders37 (4516), Malmö, Sweden Sep 26, 2009 Bottle. Pours a very dark brown almost black color with a small tan head. Has a sweetish roasted malty chocolate aroma with some hints of coffee. Has a sweetish roasted malty caramel and chocolate flavor with some weak hints of coffee. Has a sweetish roasted malty chocolate finish. Pwn3d (1036), Manhattan, New York, USA Sep 23, 2009 Aroma of cocoa and carnation instant breakfast. Pour is near black with off white beige head. Taste is smokey, cocoa, burn wood, lactic and the slightest amount of bacon. Delicious. Maltajo (103), TARRYTOWN, New York, USA Sep 21, 2009 8oz glass at The Pony Bar NYC. Dark creamy pour with a light brown long lasting head. Rich bold coffee chocolate Carmel cherries. Nice and smooth. Leighton (234), New York, New York, USA Sep 20, 2009 I indulged, and it was amazing. I am a huge fan of chocolate beers and this is one of the best I have tasted. Had it on tap at Rattle and Hum in NYC during Craft Beer Week 2009. Poured pitch black with a strong beige, fluffy head that never subsided. Aroma of roasted malts and coffee. Taste: miraculous. Notes of chocolate on the front and back ends, along with strong coffee and mild caramel flavors. Velvety smooth and rich like pudding. This was a great beer.
