| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 21, 2008 bottle thanks to dyetube. black pour with a caramel rocky head. slight roasted malts with a bit cocoa/chocolate nose. very smooth on the palate with a nice roasted malt flavor and a great cocoa finish that comes out more and you drink it. elektrikjester (7), Marietta, Georgia, USA does not count | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 21, 2008 Aroma primarily strong roasted malt with cocoa present. Appearance dark brown with minimal, dark tan head. Flavor is merely okay for a beer of this style. Roasted malt flavors dominate at first. While chocolate flavors are present, they seem to be in the background. Mild biscuit flavor in aftertaste, and alcohol is quite discernible and almost seems to dominate. Mouthfeel is good: creamy with slight effervescence. In sum: I really wanted to like this beer, but after two 750 ml bottles over two sessions, I really cannot get into this one. Better the second time around, but I think think there are better beers of this type out there. Still, while average, flavor is not too burnt, which is admirable for beer of this style. Problem is that chocolate flavors subsumed by predominance of biscuity, alcohol flavor. Okay, but not great. stefanje (938), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Sep 18, 2008 750 ml bottle from Bev4less. Pours an opaque dark brown color with a big khaki head that recedes with plenty of lacing. The aroma is relatively light with chocolate, roasted malts and cigarette butts. The flavor is rich with multiple chocolates; bitersweet, dark and milk. The mouthfeel is full and smooth. The finish was medium in duration, dry and a bit biter. Overall: An odd beer in which the flaws lend character and make the whole stronger. I really enjoyed this one. AndyReynolds (281), Wilder, Kentucky, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 10/20 | Sep 17, 2008 Shared a bomber with Bigmmartin, thanks. The aroma was very chocolatey with roasted malts and maybe a hint of coffee. The taste was strong in baker’s chocolate making it a little more bitter than what I would have expected. Not a bad beer, but not my first choice. Indra (2025), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 7, 2008 750ml bottle. Aroma of roasty malt, cocoa and vanilla, with lighter notes of coffee, earthiness and faint ash, perhaps some mild toffeeish sweetness lurking underneath. Thoroughly ebony in color, with a lasting, very fine head. Flavor profile is similarly roasty and lightly smoky with grainy bitterness throughout and only faint suggestions of the chocolate its brewed with, paired with a dry, mildly spicy, somewhat metallic finish, which I’m not the only one to have noted, apparently. Palate is finely carbonated and bitter, body is medium-full. Good enough, though I have to admit I was expecting a bit more. MaltDawg (778), Richmond, Virginia, USA

Dark 40+ Brown with large creamy tan head. Slightly bitter sour roast malt astringency. Touch of wood and sherry notes. Light body with medium mouthfeel. Okay but lacking in complexity and a touch astringent.
