NachlamSie (1630), Tennessee, USA Jun 5, 2008 750ml Pours a super dark brown with a decent tan head. The aroma is chocolate. I was a little bummed to discover it wasn’t very aromatic or complex. It’s pretty much standard chocolate stout fare in the nose. The flavor is more chocolate with a bit of roast. Only buried in the finish do I detect something that may hint at fruitier territory. Hey, this is a decent slightly dry chocolate stout. However, coming from Ommegang, I expected some Belgian character to it or at least something more robust and flavorful. I don’t like the cost to flavor ratio on this one. Kind of expensive for what it is. daknole (2800), Plantation, Florida, USA Jun 2, 2008 Bottle brought back from brewery by my neighbor. Thanks BUMPER! Beer pours a black color with a foamy brown head that leaves wonderful lacing. Aroma is (surprise) chocolate and more chocolate. Flavor is a slightly sweet chocolate, sweet coffee and roasted malt. Good beer. Boutip (2331), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jun 2, 2008 Bottle courtesy of Kryptic: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a huge foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma is totally dominated by loads of chocolate malt notes with some subtle sweetness. Taste is a mix between some huge chocolate notes with some light sweet notes. Body is slightly thin for the style with a nice creamy texture thought and some good carbonation. Alcohol was not apparent. Overall, a very interesting experiment by this fine brewery but lacking some character and maybe some lactose to be truly inspiring. twitcher (293), framingham, Massachusetts, USA Jun 2, 2008 (from notes) Pretty thin and watery on the palate, minimal body. Chocolate flavors on the sparse side, relatively weak for the name. Sweet milk chocolatey flavors over top of a thin, weak-bodied stout. Not bad, just not as exciting as one would expect. yobdoog (1417), Woodridge NY, New York, USA May 28, 2008 Nice dark look with a light brown head. At first sniff not much chocolate just roasted malt and dark burnt coffee with hints of bitterness. The taste has some bitter chocolate but the chocolate is not what shines. Very roasty and has a little lingering bitterness. edden (927), cow- lumbus, Ohio, USA May 23, 2008 5/23/08: Bottle. Roasted malt nose. Black body with cherry undertones. Deep tan colored head with ample lace which clings to glass. Flavors include roasted malt - coffee and dark cocoa. Long bitter finish. BigBeer45 (673), Troy, Michigan, USA May 22, 2008 Got this in a three bottle gift set with a Ommegang glass, poured into tulip and trappist glasses, pours brown black with dark ruby at the edges, has a decent foamy tan and/or dark tan head that thins out a little but keeps a good cover on the drink, I let this sit in a trappist glass for a bit and the bubbly cover was still there, left nice lacing on the glass to, lots of chocolate and roasted dark malt in this brew, some dry dark chocolate, some coffee and faint aroma of liquor which has a resemblance of wood whiskey, the liquor adds to this drink to, it is in the background and does not dominate at all, has a touch of sweetness on the nose, taste follows the aroma lots of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and some licorice in the background, a hint of sweetness, has some roasted malt and hop(?)bitterness at the finish, I thought all of the flavors came together well, has a medium or maybe a touch more mouth feel, has a creamy feel on the tongue, a very nice stout. rampmaster (314), Alden, New York, USA May 21, 2008 It has a dark brown almost black colored murky body that’s very opaque. The head is thick and frothy with rocky peaks and a tan color. The aroma is malty, toasted and has only a very faint hint of cocoa powder. There are dark toasted and roasted malt flavors with hints of bittersweet chocolate dust and some espresso coffee notes as well. There is a modest hop flavor that adds some bitterness to the finish, which also has a slight metallic touch to it. The texture is smooth and a little bit thin on the palate with a good carbonation and a medium body. I have had this at Brewery Ommegang during the 2007 Waffles and Puppets event and I don’t remember it having any metallic flavor to it. Overall I still enjoied it and look forward to having more of it at this years Waffles and Puppets.
