JensenTaster (1585), Denmark Mar 4, 2008 (on bottle, thanx to thewolf) Pitch(!) black, tan head. The aroma of chocolate is very strong and dominating, still light, like milkchocolates. Burnt toast balances very good and there are also a layer of yeast. A funny beer and plays with the concept of chocolate, but rather single minded in that aspect. illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Mar 4, 2008 Updated: Dec 31, 2008Poured into my Ommegang 10th anniversary glass. Color is about as close to black as it gets while still being brown. Fluffy tan head leaves blotchy lacing all over the glass.
Smell is chocolaty and biscuity, maybe similar to those chocolate graham crackers.
Flavor is closer to cocoa than the dark chocolate of most stouts. There’s also an oat note, and a faint metallic note. Finish is dry and mildly bitter. A bit faint overall however.
As you’d expect for a beer fermented with Belgian yeast, this beer is exquisitely smooth and well-attenuated. Bone dry on the tongue. Body is a bit too light for a stout, but that just makes this beer more similar to mousse than fudge. Drinkability is great. faroeviking (6016), Republica Vikingo de las, Faroe Islands Mar 3, 2008 Bottle. Pours a pitch black colour with a nice creamy light brown head. Aroma of bitter chocolate, yeast and softly roasted malt. Good filling mouthfeel. Flavour of roasted malt, nice chocolate and some dark fruits. Thaaaank you thewolfy! thewolf (5623), Kolding, Denmark Mar 2, 2008 Bottle @ thewolf tasting.
[thank you, SecretSanta]
Pours pitch black, wonderful creamy beige head. Great lacing on my glass. Aroma is chocolate, lightly roasted malts, prunes, coffee and notes of Belgian yeast. Light and low carbonated. Flavour is wonderfully dry, dark chocolate. Some roasted notes amongst some yeast. Soft, velvety and great. RomanW70 (297), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Mar 1, 2008 Pours pitch black with a thick head. Aroma of dark chocolate and...chocolate. Tatse has addistional notes of coffee and roasted malt. Has a bitter finish. Thick mouthfeel. Good stout, but doesn’t quite live up to the name. gunhaver (1024), Tampa, Florida, USA Mar 1, 2008 Updated: Jun 5, 2008Bottle. Pours pitch black. A big foamy creamy light-caramel colored head entices all. Lacing is all over the place. Looks beautiful. Big roasted chocolate and nuts in the nose, smoky coffee grounds, thin molasses. I like where this is going. Flavor is soft, roasted malts. Chocolate isn’t as big as expected. Various nuts with some slight coffee. Thin/medium-bodied. A nice warming malty mouthfeel. Bitter, chocolatey finish. Easy drinking, and quite enjoyable. tjthresh (1746), Greenfield, Indiana, USA Feb 27, 2008 750 ml bottle from dmac621. Pour dark brown with a lighter brown head and plenty of lace. The aroma it coming off as Nestles Quk powder. A bit smokey, and roasty. The flavor reveals nothing worh indulging in. Mostly just roast. Very little chocolate. Thin body. High carbonation. Dry finish. This beer is just plain boring. Radek Kliber (3912), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada Feb 25, 2008 Corked bottle 750ml
Appearance: Handsome dark brown ale , medium creamy top. Good laced ring placed on glass. Nose : Wood scented chocolate nose , minor smoky malt hints paired together with full brown malt , light aromatic hops as background.. Very nice bouquet, Flavor/Palate : dark moist woody accents, mineral midlle , rough carbonated side of chocolate malts. Some dry roasted elements at end with soapy following. Sadly substance felt a bit thin.f-7-
