hoplover406 (204), Crofton, Maryland, USA Feb 25, 2008 Being that this is a stout and not an impy I like the fact that it’s 7% and tasty. For some reason I felt like this was going to be a special beer, but it just tastes like a good stout. Not too much chocolate in the arome or taste....kind of a bummer. I actually bought this for my wife for valentine’s day, but she got sick and I drank it all....that’s a good thing though, because I hyped up the chocolate in the beer and I’m sure she would have been dissapointed too. vadavid (131), Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA Feb 24, 2008 Pours a very dark brown with a thick tan head. It certainly looks like chocolate! The aroma of dark bitter chocolate is very strong and to me it was almost off-putting. Besides the chocolate (dark cocoa, not milk) I noted some dark fruit backed by a faint tartness. The flavor was full of cocoa bitterness, along with some roasted malt that lingers in the end. The beer is only 7% ABV but a bit of alcohol warmth comes through in the finish. The mouthfeel was moderately carbonated and not as thick as I had expected. Not horrible, but not the best chocolate beer I’ve tried. gpekar (221), Maryland, USA Feb 24, 2008 Poured a dark opaque almost black color with a thick creamy light brown head. This looked great in the glass. The aroma was rather mild more smokey wood than chocolate. The flavor was also initial of a smokey wood. It took awhile but then the mild flavors of bittersweet dark chocolate and cocoa came through the flavor. Also tasted some dark roated coffee flavor almost on the bitter side. This was a nice beer, but I was kind of disappointed that the beer didn’t match up to the name given it. I was expecting a little more. Beerdedone (1873), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 23, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, cocoa, and light chocolate. Flavor is smooth and creamy with roasted malts, mild coffee, light chocolate and a hint of dark fruit. Light to medium bodied with a bitter finish. sleepylopes (313), New York, USA Feb 20, 2008 nice deep dark color with a big head. aroma of dark roast and coco. tastes like crema and dark choco. hopdog (5525), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 20, 2008 On tap. Poured a dark black color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate, roast, and some citrus. Tastes of chocolate, roasty, and some coffee in the finish. Light lacing left on the glass. OK, but with chocolate in the name, I would like to have seen more chocolate in both the aromas and tastes. kenb (1100), Oregon, USA Feb 19, 2008 Updated: Feb 20, 2008750 ml bottle via Mys Swap 3.0 (Thanks dirty martini!) Pours almost black with a large tan head that hangs around a long while. Nose is malty, with some fruity esters and a dash of chocolate. The taste though..wow...it is much more chocolaty than the aroma. It starts sweet, almost like maple syrup, then that quickly moves back and some toffee, berries, chocolate, and black malts take over, and it finishes with some pine that lingers with some soy into the aftertaste. Carbonation is medium, body is medium. Very tasty! valpoaj (362), Valparaiso, Indiana, USA Feb 18, 2008 Black pour...very thick tan head which settles beautifully with relatively heavy lacing. Aroma is dominated by rich chocolate & cocoa, sweet coffee, roasted malts & a bit of yeast. Flavor is sweet (sweeter than I expected) chocolate (though the chocolate is not really ’that’ intense), roasted malt, and some bitter coffee accents. Uh-oh, there’s a fairly intense metallic flavor in there too, and its enough to detract from the quality of the beer. I didn’t find the metallic notes to be as dominating as the beer warmed, or if I took more than a small sip of the beer, which was sort of odd, but changed the way in which I consumed this one. Mouthfeel is pretty average...doesn’t coat the palate as I like my chocolate beers, but it is not offensive. Flavor does not last very long after the drink is over. Not a bad drink, but I can’t help thinking as the bottle disappears that this could have been much, much better.
