WillieV (191), Maryland, USA Feb 11, 2008 1 Pint 9.4 oz bottle: Poured a picture perfect dark brown almost black with a light brown head. Scent of coffee and chocolate. Semi sweet taste with a slight bitter aftertaste. A very good chocolate stout. robforbes (1083), Bremerton, Washington, USA Feb 10, 2008 Updated: May 22, 2009old rating: 7/5/8/3/17 - 4.0.
pours black with a large thick foamy chocolate mousse head, and excellent lacing.
smell of chocolate, some coffee, roasted nuts, and some vanilla.
taste is creamy, dark chocolate, some coffee, touch of vanilla, touch of licorice, and oats in the back, ends dry and a little bitter. Beerlando (2281), Orlando, Florida, USA Feb 10, 2008 Pours a very dark chestnut to virtually black color. A frothy, bubbly tan head settles to an asymmetrical, thin to bubbly layer. Beautiful, thick clumps of bubbly lacing cling to the glass. The aroma is as advertised, with cocoa powder and baker’s chocolate starring. Caramel malts enter the fold, as do some dry woodsy notes, vanilla, and some funky Belgian yeast. The flavor is very chocolaty, but simultaneously dry and woodsy. There’s a very foreign feel to this one, like it came straight from Belgium. It is very yeasty for a stout, which is a welcome change of pace. Medium bodied and smooth, there is a very light chalkiness to the mouthfeel, but nothing dry enough to be annoying. Very enjoyable, but not outstanding. KnN (712), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Feb 10, 2008 A little thin, but great color and a decent head on the pour. Lots of roasted and dark malt flavor. Little bit of the chocolate flavor, but I’m going to have to agree with other posters that it leaned toward milk chocolate. eaglefan538 (2351), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Feb 9, 2008 Pours a deep dark brown-black, chocolate covered head (nicely sized, not overly done, though, with uber Belgian yeast or anything), decent Belgian-esque lacing. The aroma was smokey roasted chocolate, some coffee. The flavor was strong roasted notes, some smoke, chocolate, espresso, some non-fermented Belgian-esque sugars leftover (molasses notes too?), metallic notes, light grass, high bitterness. Mouthfeel was moderate with high carbonation. Not to my liking, not what I expected either, sorry Ommegang. PorterPounder (3131), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Feb 9, 2008 Tallahassee, Fl. - Market Square Liquors - 750 ml caged corked bottle - part of a gift pack with Hennepin and 3 Philosophers and a 10-year anniversary glass - worth the $24. Dark brown easing into black pour with a nice, thick, mocha colored head that leaves plenty of thick rings of lacing. Aroma of chocolate, red wine, black coffee - improves as it warms. Flavor of baker’s chocolate, unsweetened cocoa, day old black coffee, a hint of potting soil. Thick and rich, creamy mouthfeel. Very decent stout. gotbeach (128), San Diego, California, USA Feb 9, 2008 Bottle@Dr.Bills thin head dark brown pour. Creamy chocolate with good carbination and a smooth nice finish. footbalm (1218), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Feb 9, 2008 Bottle from Douglas88. Pours a clear dark brown. It is chocolate, aint no question. The only problem is that this was very thin. The chcolate flavor was clear and present but there was little else and did I mention it was thin. If this had more mouthfeel it would have been much better.
