jarspag (593), Los Angeles, California, USA Jan 18, 2008 Bottled with Pete. Pitch black. Aroma and flavor are pretty straight forward. Milk chocolate leaning way towards the sweet side. Ends with a tad bit dry, which it really needs. An enjoyable beer, but a bit too thin and watered down to be a stout that I can get really excited about. It’s almost funny how far I’ve come when I can say a 7% stout is "watery" and "thin" . . . thank God for beer!!!! Vac (2389), San Diego, California, USA Jan 17, 2008 On tap at Hamilton’s. Pours with a dark brown to black body topped by a medium thick tan head with some lacing left behind. It’s malty and roasty with nice underlying chocolate notes and a bit of sweetness. Full bodied and relatively smooth with a slight underlying warmth. bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA Jan 17, 2008 Bottle. dark brown beer with a tan head. light roasty, spicy aroma with chocolate. Roasty flavor with chocolate, coffee, yeast, and a bit of spice. Medium body. Chocolate and yeast linger with some roast. Nice and very drinkable. Alcohol well hidden. islay (470), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jan 16, 2008 Approximately 10 oz. pour on tap at the Happy Gnome in St. Paul, MN. Chocolate and cream scents with some dryness in the aroma. Pours a dark brown with a small amount of grayish tan head. Dark chocolate dominates the flavor. Chocolate or rootbeer-flavored lollypop taste. Roasted coffee and whipped cream. Alcohol flavor noticeable. Medium to heavy body. Crisp in the palate. Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence Stout is a solid if unspectacular dessert beer. weeare138 (933), Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 16, 2008 Appears a near black with dark brown edges. The tan head slowly fades into a a small cap that never goes away. Scattered streaks of lacing are left around the glass. It’s certainly a lovely looking beer.
Smell is of Belgian yeast esters with figs, ripe plums, and prunes with the obvious nod to chocolate malt, along with cracked grain, rich Belgian chocolate, dusty Topps bubble gum, caramel, and vanilla.
Taste echoes the aroma with bitter cocoa, dark fruit, and black grapes standing out with the yeasty profile.
Mouthfeel is super creamy and smooth with semi-sweetness up front and bitter cocoa and light hops clinging on till the finish.
This is a pretty nice brew. It’s about as good as it could get for a Belgian Stout with cocoa. I can’t really think of how to make this one much better, which is a good sign. bhensonb (4180), Woodland, California, USA Jan 15, 2008 Bottle. Didn’t open with a bang. Strong chocolate aroma with notes of coffee and some probable toasted malt. Opaque brown/black color with a decent tan head that semi-laced. Medium to full body with strong carbonation that turns creamy. The flavor starts with toasted malt, sour undernote, unsweetened dark chocolate. It’s definitely dry, and the finish is bitter chocolate dueling it out with burnt toast. Some hop bitter seems to come forth towards the end. Quite the drink. Indulgence applies. anotherbassman (11), Athens, Georgia, USA Jan 15, 2008 Pours with a nice oily sheen. With a foaming creamy tan head. Smells slightly sweet with a bit of a coffee bite. Hints of cinnamon are kicked up with a few wiffs. The taste is disappointing to say the least. The texture is creamy with a bite, but then the finish leaves a little bit of chalkiness that is less than desirable. The taste starts out slightly sweet and sour, then it moves to sweet, with a touch of bitter kicking off the center of the palate towards the sides leaving a residue of cinnamon laced coco powder, literally. All in all, I cant get past the chalkiness, and the lack of balance means that this is the first and last time I will be indulging. Holdwine (904), Beertimore, Maryland, USA Jan 14, 2008 Holy Cocoa Puffs, this is a great stout! Okay, maybe drinking it while watching the Pats beat the Jags added to the score, but this is quite a drink.... if you like chocolate. Pours like frothy chocolate syrup. Sweet and bitter notes to the nose. Good, solid stout maltiness up front with some mild chocolate then the finish pops up with a nice dark chocolate hit. I never thought I would write chocolate in a beer descriptions.
