vyvvy (2023), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Dec 29, 2007 Pours dark blackish / brown with a soapy dark tan head. The aroma has cocoa, natural sweetness, roasted malt and spicy effervescence. Medium / rich body that ends thin and has fairly sharp carbonation. The flavor begins with light berries and roasted malt. Quickly the berries go away and a funk comes in that is very Belgium and yeasty. Along with that comes chocolate and spice and there is a smooth creaminess to everything. The finish has more chocolate and spice. A very interesting and unique beer. If the price was in line with this regular offerings I’d have this quite often, but at twice the price it will probably just be for special occasions. TyRip (40), Canton, Ohio, USA Dec 28, 2007 I had very high hopes for this beer. I was thinking it would be a huge improvement in the chocolate flavor with all the great qualities of Young’s double chocolate. It turned out to be average, with a very subtle chocolate flavoring. Everything was okay about it, but it didn’t step up to greatness, and is not worth the price IMO. riversideAK (2648), Shoreline, Washington, USA Dec 28, 2007 I was pretty excited for this, but this did not live up to the hype for me. Poured dark brown/black with a nice 1/2 inch tan head. Aroma of roast with a hint of chocolate and a bit of yeast. Flavor was the same. Not really a lot of chocolate at all. Perhaps a little bittersweet, but that was it. Some roast and a minute amount of belgian yeastiness. Smooth mouthfeel with medium carbonation. It did seem a bit thin though. dmac (1418), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Dec 28, 2007 750 ml bottle purchased in a gift pack from Ocean Wine & Spirits. Wow was this a let down, maybe we should have drank this BEFORE the Beer Geek Breakfast. As much as I sniffed and sniffed I really didn’t get chocolate aroma from this one. Poured a deep dark brown with a small fizzy light beige head.Medium to thin bodied that left a watery feel despite the carbonation. Searching once again for chocolate in the flavor and mission failed. Calling this beer average is a strech, almost as much of a stech as calling it "Chocolate Indulgence". michael-pollack (2600), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 28, 2007 750ml Bottle: Aroma of chocolate, malts, dark fruits, coffee, and a tad of vanilla. Poured dark black to brown in color with a large, dense, foamy, rocky brown head that lasted throughout. Flavor of chocolate, Belgian yeast, roasting, and alcohol. Medium to full body. Chalky texture. Average carbonation. Dryish roasted chocolate malt finish. Overall, not as good as I had hoped. heemer77 (4294), Savannah, Missouri, USA Dec 28, 2007 Black body with a light brown head. The aroma is milk chocolate with some molasses. There are also some smells of light raisins and a little bit of leather. The taste is lots of prunes with some dark chocolate and cocoa notes. This has a vineous finish with a little bit of espresso. The body is relatively thin with low carbonation and is also silky smooth. The palate is refined and makes me think that this would be a great beer with a piece of chocolate or raspberry cheese cake. This is nicely done and relatively subtle. I like that they did not go completely sweet or just overwhelming dark chocolate with this one. Another winnner from Ommegang, I hope they put put this in a seasonal rotation. CamdenD (606), Madrid, Spain Dec 27, 2007 Fantastic choc stout -- much better than the Southern Tier (nearby) version from last night, mostly due to the understatedness of this brew compared to ST. Aroma is slight and unassuming, but the taste is both bitter and sweet, with chocolate present but not dominate. A classy take on a style that demands class and not indulgence, despite the name of this beer. RiverHorse (454), New Jersey, USA Dec 26, 2007 Pours a dark brown color into the tulip glass. A quick inch of tan head slowly dissapated. Scents of chocolate cake, malt and belgian spices. Flavors of a Belgian Strong Ale combined with the coffee, chocolate and roasted malty flavors of the stout nicely. A nice beer, but for the price...one I won’t be trying again for a while.
