750 ml bottle shared among 3 people... pours a dark black with a one finger tan head. aromas of roasted malts and chocolate as the name suggests. Nice and smooth over the palate with a medium to thick body that carries the robust chocolate flavor all the way through the finish. Almost velvety.... a very good Belgian style stout... excellent.... although a bit pricey.

750 ml. brown Belgian bottle. Corked & caged. Weak pop released the cork. Poured out the same color as Guinness stout, a deep chocolate brown. Aromas are fairly average, nothing stands out above anything else. Some cocoa powder in the nose. Flavors are about as you’d expect, since it is a stout after all. Nothing special here, just another gimmick as far as I’m concerned. Sorry, I just don’t get it. Certainly not worth the hype around this beer. Average beer at best.

THOUGHTS: Been waiting a while to try this one. It didn’t disappoint. While it wasn’t all I dreamed it could possibly be, it was very nice. But a little one sided. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dark brown that was black and opaque in the glass with a large to huge tan head that mostly diminished but lasted a while and left excellent lacing. The aroma was milk chocolate, mild coffee, cocoa powder and very slight alcohol. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and bitter, while the finish was light to moderate sweetness and moderate to heavy bitterness with an average duration. The flavor was cocoa mostly and a little coffee. The medium body was creamy with fizzy carbonation and a lightly astringent and ever so slightly chalky finish.

NorCal December ’07 - What an utter disappointment. I really dig everything that Ommegang makes but this wasn’t good in any sense of the word. A nose of baker’s chocolate, chalk, roasted malts, a subtle fruity/cherry aroma, and very, very light coffee. What I found unappealing was the strength of the nose, which I found everything to be too subtle. I was hoping for a really strong nose, but it just wasn’t there. Appearance was dark brown in color, thinnish head and too watery for a stout. Flavor...as best as I can describe...was bloody. Like a bloody nose. Slightly smokey and a very, barely detectable amount of chocolate. Where’s the indulgence in chocolate, because I sure in the hell couldn’t taste it. You want chocolate indulgence, go with Rogue’s Chocolate stout or Young’s Double Chocolate stout. If you want a bloody mess of a beer, here ya go.

On tap at McGregor’s. Nice sweet chocolate aroma. At first taste the alcohol was very aparent. I thought it would have been higher than 7%. As it warmed the great chocolate flavor came through. Thanks JB.

Great stuff, on tap at McGregor’s. Creamy, a bit alcoholic in the palate. Smoky, chocolate aroma. Great appearance, in a fluted glass, very dark with a thick creamy head.

750 poured into a snifter had a huge frothy brown head that stayed through the whole tasting, dark chocolate black in color with such a nice look in the glass. aroma of chocolate milk, chocolate roasted malt, light alcohol, cocoa, and hazelnut. mouth feel is so velvet smooth, absolutely no bitterness, silky cocoa chocolate, mild roasted malt, on the more dry side for a stout, but so amazingly smooth to drink, just the perfect balance of flavors. not an over the top brew but so tasty in it’s simplicity. definitely fits the profile for a foreign stout, has the taste i have come to expect from ommegang, and had much more to offer in flavor as it warmed up a bit in the glass. way to go on this one, truly an indulgence as the label states!

On tap at Pizza Port. Dark brown with a fizzy tan head. Chocolate and alcohol aroma. Dark chocolate and alcohol taste with some fruit notes.
