4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
The beer came in a classy looking 750 ml bomber with a wire cage and a cork. The cork popped up on its own while being unscrewed, and the pour revealed a highly carbonated dark brown stout. The head looked like whipped cream on a hot chocolate. The smell of this beer was sweet and full of chocolate. The real chocolate present in the beer showed up very well in the smell. And unlike most other beers of this type, there was not a hint of roastiness. The taste felt the same way, and reminded me of the occasions when I had paired dark chocolate with a stout, except this time everything was already in the glass. Very well blended taste as the dark malt and chocolate played off each otherís strengths. The taste started off like a dark chocolate, and finished with a sweet flair. If was to pick a bone with something, it would be the sort of thin body. Everything else about this beer was indulgent and luscious as promised on the label. Dessert in a bottle with a second helping to spare.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: NOV 27, 2008 Had at GABF on 10/11/2007. Aroma is a faint roasted scent. Color is a solid black with light carbonation and a thin tight head. Flavor is a nice roasted malt flavor that finishes with a toasted flavor and mild bitterness. There is no chocolate to be detected at all. I am very disappointed, I was expecting a very complex brew not just a stout.
11/27/08 - From the bottle this time and the beer is the same. I just don’t get any chocolatte off of it.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: OCT 20, 2007 Tap at Maxís on Broadway. Pours somewhat thinly to a charcoal hue that retains a wispy head of tan. Vinous aroma suggests raspberries and black cherries, layering into bakerís chocolate, cola, and raisins. Late hint of wet graham. Flavor asserts itself with a banal, tinny metallic note intially, settling comfortably into soft smoke, pumpernickel bread, oak and bittersweet cocoa. Smooth, lightly carbonated, and of medium thickness. Slighty sugary finish with hazelnut mocha; earthy coffee beans drying it out. Off-putting in an indescribable way, but certainly a solid effort.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sweet chocolate aroma, hints of metal, coffee and vanilla. Pours dark brown, black, with a dense tan head. Rich and sweet, hints of coffee, smooth, a slight tartness is creeping in the background. Nice stout though. Very tasty, iíd love to try it with some cheese cake!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at Coles. Black body, small tan head, coffee and hot fudge liqueur in the nose. Coffee, chocolate, brown bread, some alcohol presence, thinner than Iíd have expected.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 ml bottle from City Market in Burlington, VT (October 2007), served at cellar temperature from a Maudite glass. Huge caramel-creme head fills 2/3 of the glass, large bubbles popping slowly, faint lacing as the foam decays and leaves a near-opaque molasses-colored body....chocolate and coffee notes expectedly strong in the aroma, though overall the nose isnít as potent or expressive as Iíd hoped for; berries and a bit of grapiness show up quickly.....on the tongue, the carbonation is rather strong and the coca character dominates throughout, the soft velvety mouthfeel and balance of sweetness and bitterness giving it a nice espresso-cake feel, though it thins out and is a bit too fizzy at the finish....some nice touches of vanilla, perhaps a hint of Scotch; a pleasant indulgence, but not masterful enough that Iíll be having it often at this price ($12 in Burlington).

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: OCT 24, 2007 Draught. At Coleís, Buffalo NY. Odd re-rate - when I had it the first time, I could have SWORN it wasnít Ommegang, I asked the server if it might have been the Youngís Double Chocolate by mistake? but was assured not. Had it again, same place a week later, and THIS was the right beer - my original score was 8/5/9/4/16=4.2 .... now to rate the real thing. Thick brown-black bubbly pour, with a small light-brown foamy head. Aroma of cocoa, wild yeast, cereal grain, floral hops, and a hint of sour fruit - really nice. The taste followed, even funkier - bret, oh yeah!, dry chocolate, unripe plum, slightly burnt grain, medium alcohol - it took a while for me to warm up to the taste, but then it took a while for this beer to warm up anyway, it was served way too cold. Sticky, lively, yeasty mouthfeel, man there was yeast for days in here, with a burnt-bitter linger and by the end of the glass I had a nice, bret-induced smile. My table-mates werenít big lovers of the funk, so they didnít dig it as much. Hah!!

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On-tap at Coleís at $9 a pint. Mike, you are the best at getting stuff like this in. Deep chocolate, I expected to sip but it went down quicker. Lots of lace and full mouthfeel. Bitter finish and more bitter baking chocolate edge aftertaste, rather than sweet or bittersweet. I must have again..for dessert.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Black pour w/ hints of red, tan head w/ great lace. Lactose and roast malt aroma, something odd in it. Avg pal. Roast black patent flavor some lactose again and a touch of coccoa. Pretty blah.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
From the 750 ml bottle: Nice looking beer with a dark, reddish-brown body, with a very thin head around the sides of the snifter. Very potent aroma- lots of chocolate, of course, and it even seems to have something that reminds me of peanut butter. Nice cocoa-aroma, but again, Iím getting a little strangeness that I donít know what it is. Nuttiness, I guess. Iíll have to try this again later on to see if it makes more sense to me.
