On tap. The pour was a very dark brown with minimal ruby highlights. A tiny tan head sat atop the glass briefly before it gave way to the liquid below. No real lacing. The aroma was dry chocolate, thin malt and some very light spice. The flavor was chocolate and cardboard with some maltiness to it. The mouthfeel was fairly thin.

Tap at the Happy Gnome. Black color with a medium head. Aroma of dry cocoa and slight Noble hops. There’s certainly chocolate in the flavor, but it is bone dry. No sweetness here. Dry and roasty malt finish. I was at first surprised there was no Belgian character here, but didn’t realize it was supposed to be a stout. It’s a pretty good stout, but a bit light on the chocolate for one advertised as ’chocolate indulgence’.

bomber....pours a dark brown/black with thin off-white head....aroma of chocolate and quite a bit of roastiness....taste of bitter roasted chocolate malt with mild carbonation....not bad but not too many distinguishing factors in this brew.

Black in color with a thick creamy tan head. Very light roast and Belgain yeast aromas on the nose, just a slight suggestion of cocoa. Taste is pretty mild overall, some roasty flavors mix nicely with a yeasty character, and the finish holds the chocolate flavors nicely. The chocolate roasty finish is subtle, but probably what is most likable about this brew. Would’ve liked more intense flavors, though.

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2009 Ommegang puts out some excellent beers and this was no exception. It pours a beautiful chocolate brown with a light milky head. I have to admit, I got pretty concerned when the first smell that hit me was something I can only describe as dirt. Not happy about that at all, I pressed on. What met my lips was a thick, chocolaty, stout with a buttery feel on my tongue. Now I know why there was only one bottle left at my local distributor! This is a great dessert beer but maybe not something you would want to have with a main course – unless your main course is chocolate cake!

This was one of the most expensive beers I have bought but I really did like it. I don’t think it was worth the price, but good nonetheless.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bomber poured a translucent black with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of milk chocolate, carmel, light vanilla, light roasatiness and hints of licorice and smoke. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of dark chocolate, coffee, charcoal and light smoke with a smooth lingering roasty bitter finish.

Poured black but not completely opaque with a pretty big tan head. Aroma was a little roasty and chocolatey. Flavor was very similar but had a weird bitter note to it. Not to bad at all but i was just expecting a little more from ommegang.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours opaque dark brown with a medium light brown head that leaves good lacing and retains well. The aroma is of baking cocoa, roasted coffee and some sour fruity notes. The flavour brings a metallic tang to the picture, which destroys the cocoa finish and assults the sides of the tongue. The mid-palate flavours include bitter chocolate, sour, yet roasted coffee and cardboard. Medium to thin bodied with a finish that gets longer as it warms. A bit of a dissapointment from such an outstanding brewery.

750ml Bottled Shared with Drink4Satan, Thanks Mike! Pours an murky brown colour with a small creamy tan head. Nose begins sour, with cocoa powder and aluminum metallic presence. Initial taste is creamy with a deep roasted coffee. Mild sourness before aluminum metallic notes hit the sides of the mouth. Finishing with a cocoa powder and mild bitter hops. Medium Body. Good Head retention and Nice lacing of the glass. Palate duration is average.
