The aroma was spritzy with carbonation and cocoa presence. The chocolate aroma was fruity and contained a bit of smoky and roasty characteristics. Raisins and prunes were also present. The beer poured into the chalice clear black with a brown moderate head which fell slowly to lace the glass. The flavor was acidic and carbonic with a strong acrid roasty characteristic. The acidity in this was was very high and the flavor quite thin and estery. Chocolate, dark bitter, was notable as was a bit of roast. The finish was bone dry with lasting impressions of dark bittersweet chocolate into the aftertaste and beyond. The body was medium and the carbonation was moderate but the beer was so dry that it was not creamy on the palate. A bit of alcohol warming occurred post consumption and the beer became more pleasant to consume as it warmed. Ok, but nothing special. 750 ml corked and bailed bottle.

Bottle shared by DuctTape. Very dark brown almost black body with a foamy latte like brown head. Sweet, lightly musty malt aroma, with hints of dry cocoa. (7+) Sweet rich malt flavour with chocolate and cocoa notes blended well throughout. Light bitterness in the finish keeps it from becoming cloying. Smooth medium palate, interesting carbonation is tingly (3+) Very nice, less complex than expected perhaps, but quite good.

Looks like a stout, smells like a stout, tastes like a stout, finishes like a Belgian Ale? Kooky. It was very dark with a brown head. I get heavy smells of chocolate (duh) with some other sweet smells. The flavor is subtle, but chocolate does dominate. The mouth feel is creamy, but a tiny bit thin.

an unusual beer. Dark brown color. The aroma and flavor have strong cocoa powder, unprocessed and unsweetened. Flavor has a little sugar, roasted malt, and more chocolate. Rather than some candyish chocolate beers, this one is good for having real chocolate flavor, but sadly, there is an off flavor of metal and blood. Maybe aging will help.

UPDATED: DEC 24, 2007 750 ml corked bottle I was able to enjoy after Ohio State beat Michigan for the 4th game in a row. This is a beautiful stout with all around great characteristics. Brown/black in color, huge cloud-like long lasting brown head. Thick fluffy lacing surrounds the sides of the glass. Prominent chocolate aroma, both milk and dark varieties. Charred, roasted malt with a calm earthy yeastiness. Sweet and creamy on the palate. The mouth feel is very soft and decadent. Exceptionally drinkable as it’s very smooth and easy. Flavor is malty and sweet with creamy, dark, bitter chocolate. Underlying musty yeast taste, which was detectable in the aroma as well. Some hidden floral hops and more roasted malts. Cocoa and fudge flavors along with hints of vanilla and whiskey. A well crafted masterpiece. Easy on the senses, this is great.

Black in color with a thick creamy tan head. Very light roast and Belgain yeast aromas on the nose, just a slight suggestion of cocoa. Taste is pretty mild overall, some roasty flavors mix nicely with a yeasty character, and the finish holds the chocolate flavors nicely. The chocolate roasty finish is subtle, but probably what is most likable about this brew. Would’ve liked more intense flavors, though.

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2009 Ommegang puts out some excellent beers and this was no exception. It pours a beautiful chocolate brown with a light milky head. I have to admit, I got pretty concerned when the first smell that hit me was something I can only describe as dirt. Not happy about that at all, I pressed on. What met my lips was a thick, chocolaty, stout with a buttery feel on my tongue. Now I know why there was only one bottle left at my local distributor! This is a great dessert beer but maybe not something you would want to have with a main course – unless your main course is chocolate cake!

Bomber poured a translucent black with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of milk chocolate, carmel, light vanilla, light roasatiness and hints of licorice and smoke. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of dark chocolate, coffee, charcoal and light smoke with a smooth lingering roasty bitter finish.

This was one of the most expensive beers I have bought but I really did like it. I don’t think it was worth the price, but good nonetheless.

Poured black but not completely opaque with a pretty big tan head. Aroma was a little roasty and chocolatey. Flavor was very similar but had a weird bitter note to it. Not to bad at all but i was just expecting a little more from ommegang.
