750 ml bottle thanks to xnoxhatex for bringing this. Pours a dark brown with a light brown head that stays around for quite a while. Bakers chocolate and cocoa in the nose with some funkiness roasted malts. Wow this tastes like chocolate. Like pure cocoa powder. A light bitterness and roastiness from the cocoa. But really sweet. This is a desert that would be best at two or three sips, anything else and youíve had enough. Interesting beer though.

Pours opaque dark brown with a medium light brown head that leaves good lacing and retains well. The aroma is of baking cocoa, roasted coffee and some sour fruity notes. The flavour brings a metallic tang to the picture, which destroys the cocoa finish and assults the sides of the tongue. The mid-palate flavours include bitter chocolate, sour, yet roasted coffee and cardboard. Medium to thin bodied with a finish that gets longer as it warms. A bit of a dissapointment from such an outstanding brewery.

Bottle purchased at Sam the Beer Man in Binghamton, NY. Pours Black brown, light tan head. Aroma is coffee, pine, vanilla, chocolate, molasses. Flavor is the same with anise, metal, burnt coffee. This bottle was over-priced at $9.99. It was more expensive than the other Ommegang brews. Disappointing.

Pours dark brown with tan head, flavor was not as chocolate as I had expected. The dryness was not expected.

Bottle: The aroma consists of chocolate, roasted malt, and a slight nuttiness. It pours a dark brown with some very faint orange highlights and a large beige-tan head with excellent retention and some nice thin lacing. The flavor starts with some watery chocolate and roasted malt. It finishes with moderate sweet fruit and yeastiness along with some metallic notes, nuts, and a hint of alcohol. The flavors just donít seem to mesh well and the metallic flavor really throws things out of whack for me. Light-medium bodied with minimal soft carbonation leaves it feeling somewhat thin and watery at times.

Bottle. Pours black with a weak dirty brown head. Strong malt aroma with a bit of mocha. Thick and creamy to the palate. Taste starts out malty with a coffee and cocoa middle and a mildly bitter finish.

The aroma is sharp and smoky with light chocolate notes and stronger dark fruit notes. The body is black with a light mocha colored head that is pinky thin. Sharp, lightly acidic and chocolaty with coffee bitterness and acidity thrown in for good measure. Faintly metallic and tart with and ashy chalky finish.

Poured a dark brown. Fragrant cocoa, in the nose. A little bit of coffee, red fruit to complement the cocoa. More tartness than I care for. Really not bad, an enjoyable drink, but not worth the $16. As a side note, Ratebeer needs to seperate Belgian stouts out from the others, they are very different.

On-tap at Stone. Another let down from Ommegang for me. Pours dark brown with a moderate offwhite head, spiderweb lace. Smells very dark and malty, black licorice with a hint of funky sweet dark chocolate. Tastes a bit funky sweet, weird sour dark chocolate flavor. Sour malts taste like black licorice. Where’s the chocolate? Full body, good carbonation.

looks like a stout...smells like a belgian stout. definitely a belgain stout from the yeasty aroma. the name fits the brew. somehow itís semi-belgian, chocolate-y, and stout-ish. it hasnít quite integrated all of the aspects of the name, yet it has made a valiant attempt as such. itís funny that all the aspects shine through of each of the three styles, yet nothing really integrates too gracefully. as a belgian ale, itís pretty good, and definitely unique. as a stout...well, iíve seen worse, but iíve also seen far better. the malts show themselves as the ale warms, yet it still feels as though it is lacking the stout mentality. itís like the brew is a bit of a conundrum, in that - it doesnít know what it wants to be. great idea, ommegang (or duvel). but the execution could have fared to more advantageous results.
