Bottle from West Lakeview Liquors, Chicago. Apperance is a hazy, very dark brown color with tan head. I got a very strong smoked turkey aroma that no one else seemed to get with chocolate powder and some sweet malt. The flavor was like eating a spoonful of cocoa powder with malt bitterness and grain, it was semi-sweet but very strange. Body was medium to full and nicely carbonated. A little too much going on, I am glad i was able to share it.

Bottle from Shoreline Liquor Shared with Bartzilla and Naven. Pours black with a 1 finger creamy light brown head. Nose is rich chocolate with some robust malts. Taste was a little metallic and it was difficult to get beyond that metallic taste. Besides the metallicness the choclate was nice, the palate was a little thin but overall not terrible. Hope the metal was just this bottle.

On tap. The pour was a very dark brown with minimal ruby highlights. A tiny tan head sat atop the glass briefly before it gave way to the liquid below. No real lacing. The aroma was dry chocolate, thin malt and some very light spice. The flavor was chocolate and cardboard with some maltiness to it. The mouthfeel was fairly thin.

Poured black but not completely opaque with a pretty big tan head. Aroma was a little roasty and chocolatey. Flavor was very similar but had a weird bitter note to it. Not to bad at all but i was just expecting a little more from ommegang.

UPDATED: DEC 20, 2008 750 ml, bb date stamp is blank. Opaque brown-black with a large lasting head. Aroma is cocoa, bubblegum, and bread yeast. Flavor is cocoa, spicy Belgian yeast, light fruit, and slight alcohol. Palate is light-medium and nearly astringent as eating a spoonful of dry cocoa. A unique beer and the best Ommegang I have sampled, but I am still none too impressed with the overpriced output from this overrated brewery.

Black with a lingering tan head. Aroma is malty with a slight hint of dark chocolate. Flavor is malty, and a little bitter like an average stout. There’s a bit of a bittersweet finish to it as well. Chocolate flavors are subdued and hard to notice at first. I could deal with more chocolate flavor in this one especially with the name given to it. Generally, this is a fairly pleasant beer, but I was a bit disappointed in it.

On tap at the Blue Nile in Minneapolis. Very dark brown pour with a finger thick head that reminds you of hot chocolate. Roasted malt aroma with shaved dark chocolate and cocoa. Very smooth body. The flavor is not as strong in the chocolate feel as the aroma. There may be some dark fruit and maybe black walnut in here.

Bottle from Douglas88. Pours a clear dark brown. It is chocolate, aint no question. The only problem is that this was very thin. The chcolate flavor was clear and present but there was little else and did I mention it was thin. If this had more mouthfeel it would have been much better.

750ml bottle courtesy of MrBendo. Pour is black with ruby highlights and a one inch tan head. Head had decent retention. Aroma of cocoa and dark chocolate roasted malt. I also detect some earthy vegetable notes as well. An interesting nose, to be certain. Taste has more of an old coffee taste then the cocoa chocolate. In fact, the chocolate was barely perceptible in the taste. A little bit on the bland side. Palate was pretty thin, certainly not as big as expected. Finish is dry and chalky. This was drinkable, but not terribly exciting. Was more or less a straight forward Dry Stout to me.

Bottle: Dark brown with a large, creamy tan head. Smells of light roast and coffee, just a bit o’ chocolate. Some of that Ommegang yeast too. Flavor is flat and dry chocolate (like the kid’s nestle quick), light roast, and a little metallic tasting. Not nearly what I had hoped for. At least the body is thick and creamy...
