BigBeer45 (461), Troy, Michigan, USA May 22, 2008 Got this in a three bottle gift set with a Ommegang glass, poured into tulip and trappist glasses, pours brown black with dark ruby at the edges, has a decent foamy tan and/or dark tan head that thins out a little but keeps a good cover on the drink, I let this sit in a trappist glass for a bit and the bubbly cover was still there, left nice lacing on the glass to, lots of chocolate and roasted dark malt in this brew, some dry dark chocolate, some coffee and faint aroma of liquor which has a resemblance of wood whiskey, the liquor adds to this drink to, it is in the background and does not dominate at all, has a touch of sweetness on the nose, taste follows the aroma lots of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and some licorice in the background, a hint of sweetness, has some roasted malt and hop(?)bitterness at the finish, I thought all of the flavors came together well, has a medium or maybe a touch more mouth feel, has a creamy feel on the tongue, a very nice stout.
MrRomero (1879), Wiesbaden-Biebrich, Germany Aug 19, 2008 750ml bottle: poured dark brown with a fairly large brown head. Roasted malt, vanilla, chocolate in the aroma. Moderately dry flavor with chocolate notes and roasted malt. High carbonation. Good. Optigon (546), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Aug 17, 2008 Pours deep brown with a fine, tan head. Aroma is yeasty with vanilla and chocolate notes. Strong bitter chocolate flavor with vanilla and yeasty flavors standard of Ommegang. Very good. markwise (257), Orlando, Florida, USA Aug 13, 2008 Bottle from Oldsmar Tap House. It pours a dark brownish-black with a slight off-white/ tan head. It has a very big dark chocolate and a weaker, but very noticeable coffee presence, too. The cocoa is very noticeable with the slightly bitter finish. abcfan (149), USA Aug 12, 2008 Very nice stout, pours black with a fluffy brown/tan head. Nice chocolate/coffee aroma in this one, with a hint of belgian style yeast. Nice cocoa and coffee taste, with a smooth slightly bitter finish. Would drink again. RollinHard (527), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Jul 27, 2008 Thanks to Secret Santa (mcbackus) for this! Pours dark brown to black with a tan head of good size, lacing, and duration. Aroma is subtle but very nice; Dry cocoa powder, wood, crushed leaves, rye, and maybe just a hint of licorice. In the aroma, the chocolate is really nice. Tastes a bit more normal with a flavor of dark chocolate, very dry cocoa, unsweetened coffee, wood, toast, and a bit of caramel. Finishes lightly bitter with a pleasant coffee aftertaste, but the salty, cloying sensation on my throat isn’t pleasant at all. I don’t like it when a beer’s finish encourages so many sips of water. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, carbonation is fairly high, but not too much, and the beer is highly drinkable. Good enough, but with a tweaked flavor and finish, it could be awesome.
