Duvel Rustica Golden Ale is our long-anticipated collaboration with Duvel. Itís our first Belgian-style Golden Ale, a elegant ale noted for using simple ingredients to create complex flavors and aromas. We worked closely with Duvel on the recipe and processes, yet added our own signature notes. This Duvel collaboration created a fine ale, one with all the depth and breadth of Duvelís classic Belgian Golden Ale, along with rustic notes, including fruity esters from our yeast. In keeping with our rustic farmstead roots, Rustica pours a golden hue, the aroma and flavor mixes maltiness and citrus from hops while the yeast produces notable fruitiness. The body is lean and rounded, while the finish offers dry warmth & firm hop bitterness.

750ml Bottle. The pour was a hazy yellow amber with an average (1-2 finger) white creamy head that reduced to a thin film and medium collar, with very good sheets of lacing. The aroma was of a light grain malt, floral hops and a musty Belgian yeast with notes of citrus (lemon), green apple, pears and a touch of coriander. The taste was mildly sweet and very fruity from the get go and pretty much lasted throughout, progressing slightly with a bold yeast presence along with a spicy citrus taste towards the finish. The flavor hung around for a good long while following the swallow, with a nice citrus yeast taste that was complemented by a mellow alcohol warming sensation. Mouthfeel was just past light in body with a mildly dry yet creamy texture and a carbonation that just went beyond mild in intensity. Overall I have to say this brewer never seems to disappoint, and this is no exception. This beer is a fantastic representation of a Belgian Golden Ale with a great taste and superb drinkability... www.facebook.com/KAJIIsBeerRevi

Pours a very cloudy, very dark golden yellow color thatís almost ripe banana brown. Completely opaque and murky with a half finger off-white head that quickly settles into a thin ring. Minimal spotty lacing left behind. Slightly earthy aroma with some farmhouse must, peppery spice, pale malt and estery light fruit notes. Bready with the yeast being the strongest presence. Not too rustic farmhouse like with lots of sweet apple and pear along with pepper, biscuit malt and crisp, grassy hops. Medium bodied with tight carbonation and a crisp, earthy funk that lingers over the pale malts, earthy hops and estery fruit notes into a tart finish. More complex than expected with a strong earthy barnyard funk presence. Dry, earthy and tart followed by some resinous hop bitterness. Grassy with some pine needle flavor followed by alcohol and light fruit sweetness. Hints of apple, pear and light grape along with biscuit malt backbone. A touch boozy and over carbonated with a weird combo of spice, funk and esters. Kind of like wild farmhouse version of duvel but I prefer the cleaner flavor profile of the original.

Near clear golden pour with ample offwhite head. Nose and flavor is floral and malty and bready and sweet and mellow and smooth. Palate is velvety and chewy. Donít get any of the hop bitterness as advertised, but itís very good.

I found this to be more full-bodied than Duvel, with more yeast, less hops and citrus, and overall not quite as refreshing. Still a nice offering.

Cloudy tan...certainly doesnít have that Duvel head, aroma is appetizing, with sweet honey, some gentle spiciness, yeast complexity. The taste...Iím not sure this follows through. The orangey character is there but muted, the malts pushed more to the fore and are sweeter and the alcohol is Duvel-like but it doesnít work as well with the hop dryness. Does not compare well to Duvel and only okay as a strong Belgian golden.

[5236-20130419] 1pt9.4floz bottle. Light grainy grassy lemon aroma. Slightly hazy, light orange yellow body with a quick foamy white head. Grainy lemon bitter yeast flavour. Medium body. Fair but a little old? (6/3/6/3/13) 3.1

Fresh bottle.

Pours maize with a white head into a Duvel tulip. The aroma is insanely good -- the epitome of what a golden farmhouse ale should offer. Grassy fields that take you there, cut hay drying in the sun, a bit of dust, leather, pepper, a mild hint of the bubblegum and banana to come in the flavor. I am really impressed. This aroma reminds me not only why I like rustic golden ales but also why I love beer in general. It makes me start to think about giving a rare 10 for aroma.

The bubblegum comes up forwardly in the flavor, a bit stronger than I like, and the yeast contributes the expected spiciness. While this is a relatively dry beer, the esters contribute a certain sweetness and the alcohol is not undetectable. A chocolate-covered salt caramel pairing is money, pushing the sweetness into the background and drawing out the noble hops that otherwise are more in the aroma than flavor. I think I need to revisit the whole Ommegang range; my bet is that I came to it too early in my beer journey and didnít appreciate it for what it was.
