Night gathers and itís time to announce the newest beer in the Game of Thrones series. Take the Black Stout is named for the oath taken by those who stand the Nightís Watch at the Wall, defending Westeros against northern.

Take the Black Stout is a 7% beer, brewed with base, caramel, chocolate and roasted barley malts. Hopping includes Northern Brewer and Columbus; spices are licorice root and star anise. Hue is black with full tan head. Aromas include chocolate, caramel, and earthy hops, light roastiness, a touch of fruitiness. Tastes include chocolate, coffee, rich malts, and balanced roastiness. Clean hop bitterness joins with slight woody character and spiciness; the finish offers sweet malt character leading to spicy, earthy, hop bitterness.

Black pour with a tan head. The aroma is roasted with mild coffee and chocolate. It has a full body with smooth texture and average carbonation. The taste is roasted with slightly sweeter finish.

November 23rd, 2013 - I knew nothing about this beer, Jon Snow, before seeing it at a local bottle shop. Given our regular worship of the show every Sunday evenings, it was a simple decision to hand over the monies and bring it back across the wall to my thirsty colleagues back home. Unfortunately, this wasnít timed well for actually watching the show, so we enjoyed it as a party of three while watching the equally dark and stormy television show Bobís Burgers. The body is crow feather black, and the foam a heady topping of cork colored bubbles. The aroma is deep and sweet, with more than two scoops of raisins and brown sugar, pushing the sweeter dimension to a healthy extreme. Thereís jellied fig too, but it is easily eclipsed by raisins and raisin-based desserts. Oatmeal raisin cookie might be a good deScriptor here, blending grains and fruits in harmony. The mouthfeel has medium carbonation, maybe even a little soft or muddy like a Belgian Strong Ale, but it pairs well with the flavors: starting sweet with berries, wood and cheese. But then it "Takes the Black", as it were, hunkering down to a huskier, maltier slow burn. The aftertaste is more monotone in its malt sweetness, but retrains that thin cord of raisin flavor, simmering with a sugary, smoldering note before extinguishing itself with a sudden last flicker of raisin.

Dark black pour with soft foamy head. Nose of roast and mild dark cherry/Belgian yeast. Flavor is deep roast and bitter chocolate with a tangy wood-like dryness in the finish. Well-cared with lingering touches of roast malt, dark fruit, dark cherry and Belgian yeast esters.

Bomber. Pours black, thin tan head and minimal lacing. Aroma of dark fruits, malts and a bit of roast. Taste of fruit, slightly roasted malts and a bit of coffee. Solid stout; very enjoyable. Quite good.

This is not a classic stout. The aroma reveals a spice presence more reminiscent of a saisson and not so much in the way of roast grain. The beer is beautiful in a glass, especially the epic thick creamy dark tan head. The taste reveals the roasted malt base with a pleasantly balanced spice note to the finish. A very good beer, whatever itís style actually is.

Poured into a snifter. 3.5 A: Black color. One finger of frothy light brown head. Retention is about average and just a few wisps of lacing are left. 3.5 S: The nose is dominated by spicy yeast. Lots of pepper and nearly as much clove. Tons of dark fruits in the form of plum, currants, and black cherries. Bitter, unyielding roastiness. Hints of chocolate and caramel sweetness, but the roast is definitely the boss here. 3.25 T: Tastes like it smells. Lots of spice, lots of fruit, and lots of roastiness. Itís rather dry without much balancing malty sweetness. 3.5 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation with a pleasant spritzy component. Could be a bit creamier, but good overall. 3.25 D: Iím not the hugest fan of Belgian stouts, but this one is pretty good. Lots of roastiness that makes you take the black, whether you want to or not. Recommend watching GoT while drinking. ★ 897 characters DavoleBomb, Nov 08, 2013

Pours a dark brown colour with a big foamy mocha-coloured head that stays long and has thick soapy lace. Roasted malt aromas blended with apples notes. Hints of dark fruits, but overall mild with some wood and vanilla. The mouthfeel is pretty nice with some wetness at start, going down nicely, to end up with a mildly dry finish. Roasted malts and light grass lingers. Caramel base, but not too sweet. More on the bitter side. Not bad, but not my favourite Missing some coffee and chocolate. Seems like these come out slightly with time.

Drank 16 Oct 2013, the day I found out I was going to be based in Minot after initial training. This was a dark and mysterious stout. Definitely fits what my mindís eye would expect this beer to be from the name and series. Dark, a little sweet, hint of roast, firm hops.
