COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Night gathers and it’s time to announce the newest beer in the Game of Thrones series. Take the Black Stout is named for the oath taken by those who stand the Night’s Watch at the Wall, defending Westeros against northern.

Take the Black Stout is a 7% beer, brewed with base, caramel, chocolate and roasted barley malts. Hopping includes Northern Brewer and Columbus; spices are licorice root and star anise. Hue is black with full tan head. Aromas include chocolate, caramel, and earthy hops, light roastiness, a touch of fruitiness. Tastes include chocolate, coffee, rich malts, and balanced roastiness. Clean hop bitterness joins with slight woody character and spiciness; the finish offers sweet malt character leading to spicy, earthy, hop bitterness.

750 ml. Nose is oatmeal, char, dark chocolate, soy and anise. Opaque ebony body with a lasting film of creamy foam. First flavor has graham cracker, semi-sweet chocolate, and then turns to a pleasant hit of earthy roasted vegetable and prunes. Subsequent sips are dominated by the dark, earthy spice mix that soon becomes a too-dominant mix of tobacco, cardboard and licorice. Medium body is watery with a too-long bitter spice additive finish. Medium-high fizz that flares up in the mouth doesn’t help this one either.

2/14/16. 750mL bottle from Five Points. Happy Valentine’s Day, I guess, though technically it’s just after midnight, not the actual day. Black pour with a thick, creamy tan head that lasts for days and coats with lacing. House yeast maybe? Chocolate on the aroma, dark chocolate that is, a big dose of dark roasted malts, light spice. Ashy, dry, roasted malt flavor, a touch of a savory aspect, dark dark bakers chocolate, a Belgian aspect, light spice, lingers dry and bitter. High, burning carbonation.

Aroma is Belgian yeast, roasted malt, not much else. Appearance is black, poured thin, light brown. Taste is Belgian yeast, some roasted malt, nothing else. Mouthfeel is heavy, medium carbonation, lots of Belgian yeast in the aftertaste. Overall, about as good as expected from a brewery I don’t like.

The aroma is caramel, a little coffee. Pours black with a frothy tan head, mostly lasting and excellent lacing. The taste is bitter. The body is medium, the texture thin, the carbonation fizzy and the finish bitter. Not bad, just a little too fizzy.

Pours black with a foamy, brown head. Nose is earthy with chocolate and coffee notes; hint of anise. Taste is rich and bitter like dark chocolate. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Very nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Reminds me a lot of the first beer we homebrewed. Dark burnt flavors round out the medium body chocolate flavors.

A Christmas gift from buddy Alex. A full bodied stout that is appropriately acrid at start and mellows to full rounded roastyness by finish. Dark and silky in the Steigl mug I also received at Christmas from sister in law Sue... Hi Sue. Thick burnt umber head. A thoroughly enjoyable beer.
