3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Ommegang Game Of Thrones #2 - Take the Black Stout
Very dark near black pour over a very foamy and active tan head. Head lasts forever and leaves some very thick lacing. Scent is all malts and earth and chocolate. Very thick mouth. Lots of dark chocolate bitterness and a surprising amount of hops. Much more hops taste than usual in a stout. Iím guessing high IBUs here. Thereís a tartness as well, licorice like. Itís like itís trying to be too dark. Trying too hard to have a touch of harshness that I think ruins the balance a bit.
For a theme beer I think it does what it is trying to do. The problem is that I think it takes it too far. This would be fantastic if slightly less harsh.

Poured into a snifter.
3.5 A: Black color. One finger of frothy light brown head. Retention is about average and just a few wisps of lacing are left.
3.5 S: The nose is dominated by spicy yeast. Lots of pepper and nearly as much clove. Tons of dark fruits in the form of plum, currants, and black cherries. Bitter, unyielding roastiness. Hints of chocolate and caramel sweetness, but the roast is definitely the boss here.
3.25 T: Tastes like it smells. Lots of spice, lots of fruit, and lots of roastiness. Itís rather dry without much balancing malty sweetness.
3.5 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation with a pleasant spritzy component. Could be a bit creamier, but good overall.
3.25 D: Iím not the hugest fan of Belgian stouts, but this one is pretty good. Lots of roastiness that makes you take the black, whether you want to or not. Recommend watching GoT while drinking.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a dark brown colour with a big foamy mocha-coloured head that stays long and has thick soapy lace. Roasted malt aromas blended with apples notes. Hints of dark fruits, but overall mild with some wood and vanilla. The mouthfeel is pretty nice with some wetness at start, going down nicely, to end up with a mildly dry finish. Roasted malts and light grass lingers. Caramel base, but not too sweet. More on the bitter side. Not bad, but not my favourite Missing some coffee and chocolate. Seems like these come out slightly with time.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Drank 16 Oct 2013, the day I found out I was going to be based in Minot after initial training. This was a dark and mysterious stout. Definitely fits what my mindís eye would expect this beer to be from the name and series. Dark, a little sweet, hint of roast, firm hops.

On tap at Dexters, pours a very dark brown almost black with a thin light brown head and spotty lacing, the aroma has a kick of coffee mixed in with some sweetness of caramel and malt, the flavor has a coffee like front end with a chocolate touch in the finish, pretty easy drinking, enjoyable.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft pour at special brews. Pours black with a tan fizz head. Slight coffee and roasted malt aroma. High carb flavor with a lot of chocolate. Some espresso late in the palate. Unique stout for sure, though I canít quite explain why. Very tasty. Nicely done

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
My first beer from Ommegangís Game of Thrones series. Looked promising out of the gate with an opaque black body, crowned by a beautiful, pillowy mocha head. The nose was a letdown though, with some mild vanilla cream, and not much else. Mouth feel was similar to most stouts Iíve had, if a little on the sweet side. Taste wise, there was nothing Iíve experienced in the last two dozen stouts Iíve had, as in no mocha, no cocoa nibs, no chocolate, no coffee. The label says Star Anise and licorice root, but Iím not getting that either. There is a bit of almost, but not quite, hoppy bitterness on the swallow, but it is a generally an uneventful beer, and one of the least interesting stouts I have ever drank. Best before date is 5 months from now, so Iím sure itís fine, just not to my tastes.

Pour on tap at Town Hall Tap, dark black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of cocoa, anise, dark fruit, smoke into a bit of roasted malt, slight spicy notes. Taste was a mix of coffee, chocolate, dark fruit, anise, hints of smoke into a bit of spice, touch of yeast, finishing fairly sweet, yeasty and spicy as well.
