Night gathers and it’s time to announce the newest beer in the Game of Thrones series. Take the Black Stout is named for the oath taken by those who stand the Night’s Watch at the Wall, defending Westeros against northern.

Take the Black Stout is a 7% beer, brewed with base, caramel, chocolate and roasted barley malts. Hopping includes Northern Brewer and Columbus; spices are licorice root and star anise. Hue is black with full tan head. Aromas include chocolate, caramel, and earthy hops, light roastiness, a touch of fruitiness. Tastes include chocolate, coffee, rich malts, and balanced roastiness. Clean hop bitterness joins with slight woody character and spiciness; the finish offers sweet malt character leading to spicy, earthy, hop bitterness.

Pours black with a medium off-white head. Aroma is slightly muted, lots of roasted malts, a little coffee and chocolate as well. Taste is mildly sweet up front and in the finish with a moderate bitterness in the middle. Medium body, average carbonation, thinner on the palate. A nice beer, but not as spectacular as I was hoping for.

Bottle from back in 2013. Cleaning out the corners of the rot box tonight. Pours opaque black, medium creamy tan head, dissipates with lots of residual and nice lacing. Aroma is roast, hints of smoke, molasses, black licorice. Flavor is light plus sweet, light bitter, roasty, earthy, molasses and anise. Full bodied. I really wanted to hate this as a gimmick beer, but its actually pretty well done.

Poured from a growler. Deep and dark which works well for me today. A beer that does not play around with its taste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
