COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Fire & Blood is a 6.8% ABV Red ale, brewed with pilsner, Cara-60, Midnight Wheat, flaked rye and spelt. Assertive hopping includes CTZ, Styrian Golding and German Tettnang hops. Spiced with de-seeded Ancho chilies. Fire & Blood has a deep, dark red hue with a persistent, creamy, off-white head. Aromas of ripe fruit, raisins, malt & slight spice, followed by a slightly floral and spicy hop character. A fruity, sweetish malt taste gives way to faint drying provided by the hops & rye.

750 mL bottle from the LCBO, served in a stem glass. Pours clear caramel with a moderate tan head that mostly remains and leaves a small amount of fine lace. The nose has big peppery notes paired up with toasted malts, bread, raisins, subtle fruit and a hint of spice. The flavour is mildly sweet up front with toffee, caramel, raisin and subtle fruit paired up with a slight peppery spiciness and delicate hops. It dries out around the middle, as the peppery notes pick up along with some wheat notes. A slight roasted malt character also comes through. Hops provide adequate balance but are not emphasized. The finish is long and spicy with moderate pepper lingering on the palate. It is medium in body with a dryish texture and average carbonation. Overall, an interesting spicy red ale with wheat and peppery notes. Not my favourite style, but a nice example nonetheless. 2014-08-05

750 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with full head that settles to a moderate foamy head. Aromas of dark brown sugar, roasted malts, and light vegetables. Flavors are similar with a heavy emphasis on dry roasted malts and additional dry spicy notes. Can’t really get the chilies though these may come across as a slight burnt flavor.

Pours a deep ruby with a fat finger of fluffy off-white head diminishing gradually to a thin skim and no lacing. Nose is faint, dark fruit and Belgian yeast. Taste leads slightly sweet, dark fruit, with mild spice and a slightly metallic astringency on the finish. Mouth feel is medium-bodied, with mild sustained carbonation and a sticky finish. Not all that interesting, actually. The spice is very muted, only becoming apparent fairly late in the bottle. Not one of Ommegang’s finest efforts, perhaps, but red ales don’t tend to be all that thrilling regardless.

Dark hazy ruby/amber under a tight creamy off-beige head. Earthy caramel and amber malt nose with dates/raisins as well as a strong amber/crystal malt aroma. Full rich amber flavor with a strong earthy depth and a little earthy bitterness but with loads of nutty caramel and a bit of Belgian yeast dustiness. A bit dryer than I prefer.

A 750 bomber from BC Liquor store in North Burnaby. An orange amber beer with generous tan head. Nothing much on the nose. In the mouth I have to say I’m not getting much either. A bit of hop, a bit of malt and a bit of pepper oil. Back in the fridge it goes and will try again tomorrow...
